Let's say one was thinking about a van/camper to go cross-country & back. I've seen exactly 50/50 arguments for buying a prefabricated and selling it down the road vs buying a solid used frame and customize w/ a refurbisher. Class B for you RV freaks. 😁 Thoughts?

Depends on your skill level. Are you the hands on type that can tackle plumbing, carpentry, and electrical challenges or do you need someone else to do the work for you?

Depends on how complex you make it. If it’s just a bunk and storage, it’s so easy a cave person could do it. Adding plumbing and 12/120v wiring takes some planning but the execution is not all that bad.Let's say one was thinking about a van/camper to go cross-country & back. Ive wanted to build one out for years my bank account just doesnt get it. Lol
I would prioritize a fiberglass high top. Being able to stand to change and just wait out weather etc would be required for me. Look at some videos of van builds and see what you think. I'm sure you could handle the build out, depending on how crazy you wanted to go. At the same time if you could afford a nice class B that would take alot of the work out, and get you some nice finishes.
If it was me I would look for a high top cargo van, astro, conversion, or fiberglass high top vannagon.
Speaking of vannagons, I recently discovered this place in Pulaski that has literal hundreds of vannagons. Great resource for info too.

This is my son John's latest project, a 1994 Dodge RoadTrek. The first picture is from his maiden voyage to camp on the beach at Galveston. First festival outing is Bonnaroo i n a few weeks. He wanted something that would not require him to buy an RV pass but was a step up from tenting. This fits the bill nicely...
He is doing his own remodel. He has redone the electrical system, added an inverter and solar panels on the roof, etc. He has zero experience in anything like this so you shouldn't have any problem The Tube is your friend.

I have had elaborate fantasies of this and will probably custom refurbish one in the future. I agree with Lobster on standing room. I will probably buy a utility van and gut it, but this ain’t my first rodeo. Agree with TOO, if you get confused changing your AC air filter, you probably won’t magically develop into Bob Villa, but if you’re willing to learn, there is nothing you can’t do with YTube. My son in law has one he'd sell, similar to the one in TOO's photo--I think a late 90's and I think Dodge. Does not need rehab. The vehicle is mechanically sound (he's a hobby mechanic) but there is currently an issue with the house charging system, which may just be old batteries, and he hasn't had time to wrench on it.
Bonus it has a built-in cassette player so he'll probably throw in a box of my old cassettes!

Sportsmobile is the conversion company been around forever and still in business. I recall they have a roof platform not much else.
