I thought the last night was handled very well. They weren't trying to top Fare Thee Well, they werent treating it like "the last big Dead stadium show EVER!" even though it very well may have been. It felt like one last D&C party, an intimate experience between the band and the fans that have followed them. It had just the right balance between farewell nostalgia and a normal concert. They weren't stopping in between each song to say thank you, the setlist certainly had some songs chosen for the occasion but they didnt beat us over the head with it. They definitely "played the hits" but it wasnt like they were rushing through songs trying to jam as many in as possible. They crafted what they felt was the best setlist they could with it still feeling like a 'normal' setlist and they gave each song the room and attention it deserved. The drone show was of course awesome, just an all around great weekend.
I think this was the perfect way to end this band and this era. And while I know in my heart this was the best time to end it, I already feel a little sadness knowing the band won't ben a part of my life anymore. I know I'll feel that void next Summer when I look up and realize my concert calendar is a lot more wide open than I'm used to. Say what you want about slow tempos, cash grab, John Mayer, corporatization, etc etc. I've certainly said plenty of that myself. Nonetheless, we've been lucky enough to see these songs performed live in big summer tour settings for the last 8 years now and I think a lot of people are soon going to realize how lucky we were and how much they miss this band

I tend to agree. Sunday was a good show. It was definitely a greatest hits sort of setlist but well done nonetheless. This is just the end of this chapter, the book is far from finished. I'll be looking at Phil & Friends and Wolf Bros. shows now. The Music Never Stopped.
Now the Mayer haters and tempo police can go kick rocks...

San Francisco, night 3/3. This music has made me a better player, and this band made me a better person. I was given the opportunity of a lifetime - to have access to the greatest songbook in modern music, and the deepest well of life memories shared by hundreds of thousands of Deadheads who extended their grace and acceptance to me. I learned to compromise, and to take other people’s chances along with them. I learned to play in real time, to express myself without the distraction of ambition or expectation. I learned to listen, to have musical conversation, and most importantly, to be a part of something much bigger than myself. It was never about me. It was bout “it” - that spirit that a band and a crowd could go looking for together. If I’ve done my job right, I’ll disappear into that beautiful tapestry, the one that began almost 60 years ago and will continue to expand for lifetimes to come. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for embracing me and my place in this band, and to Bob, Mickey, and Billy - I’ll never be able to fully express my gratitude for your taking a chance on me. Something magical happened on this tour, and I don’t think any of us saw it coming. Dead & Company is still a band - we just don’t know what the next show will be. I speak for us all when I say that I look forward to being shown the next shaft of light… I know we will all move towards it together. This band changed my life, and I love you all for it. An incredible tour, an unforgettable ride, and a beautiful world of memories to visit. I’ll be seeing you…. ⚡️♥️⚡️

Never one to gather dust, Bob Weir has announced a new batch of tour dates with Wolf Bros & The Wolf Pack less than 48 hours after finishing Dead & Company‘s Final Tour in San Francisco. The new crop of five concerts will take the Grateful Dead guitarist/vocalist and his backing band (featuring Dead & Co’s Jeff Chimenti and Jay Lane) throughout the eastern United States this September.
Bob Weir & Wolf Bros’ September tour dates are structured around appearances as part of Willie Nelson‘s traveling Outlaw Festival. After setting out with a show at Park City Song Summit in Utah on September 8th, the band will play Outlaw Festival gigs in Tennessee and South Carolina ahead of Bob Weir & Wolf Bros’ headlining show at Ting Pavilion in Charlottesville, VA on the 13th.
Between Outlaw Fest stops, Bob Weir, along with drummer Jay Lane, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, bassist Don Was, and The Wolf Pack auxiliary string and horn section featuring pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless, will play standalone shows in South Burlington, VT (9/19), Columbus, OH (9/26), Philadelphia, PA (9/27), and Baltimore. MD (9/28). Along the way, the band will meet up with Willie Nelson yet again for a set at Farm Aid in Noblesville, IN on the 23rd.
An artist pre-sale for the new Bob Weir & Wolf Bros tour dates begins Thursday, July 20th at 10 a.m. local time. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday at 10 a.m. local time here.

Something like a 4 day festival with D&C playing 3 nights. Fill the rest of the time with side projects, smaller bands, GD art exhibits, etc etc. Oteil and Friends, Golden Gate Wingmen, Melvin Seals, give the biggest dead cover band from whicever region its in a slot, maybe have a 'tier 2' band to headline the night D&C doesnt play (just please not Goose). Maybe a late night Jrad set or two. Or a late night Mickey drum set ala that set in the woods at Lockn. All bookended by three nights of D&C two set shows.
A festival would allow most of the fanbase to go, they could sell tickets in tiers to make their money, the festival atmosphere would keep from putting too much pressure on the band to knock it out of the park, and it would only be a one (maybe two?) weekend investment. I think it would capture the spirit of The Dead while allowing them to perform in a way that makes practical and financial sense for all. Say...I know of a certain farm in Virginia that would be perfect for this...

I agree with a lot of what you’ve posted. The next move should be an event next fall at a festival site. I prefer Suwannee, The Double JJ & Lockn’s Site ( in that order for sites). Hog Farm or Horning’s while awesome would be far too small. I think 4 days with Dead & Co headlining 2-3 nights would be great. If they could get Phil for Thursday/Friday and then Dead & Co for Sat/Sun that would be ideal.
Then have a solid band like Billy Strings, String Cheese, Goose, UM, Gov’t Mule, Vida Blue, Greensky, TAB, etc… to do late nights & then get Keller to do an afternoon warm up set each day. Maybe an Oteil & Friends set built around Keller, a Grateful Grass thing one day, etc…
