growing up, we hated black eyed peas and our mother would cook them New Year's Day anyway--with stewed tomatoes. Supposed to eat 365 peas. So I hid the bag of peas and she couldn't find them to cook them (stores were closed NYD back then). They turned up in the spring in an Easter egg hunt.
I spent this NYD shucking oysters at a friend's NYD party. Yum.

I never heard of eating black eyed peas on New Years until we moved to VA. I found a delicious black eyed pea hot dip recipe that I often make at family gatherings. Pair it with Naked Chips and you’ve got a winner. I’ll post the recipe if I can find it in our piles of recipes.
