The original farm house was destroyed by arson 2 years ago. The new house was just completed this year and this trip will be our grand reopening.

A cool spot. When I was at Washington and Lee nearby, I lived in a farmhouse in those environs, as did many of my friends, and loved the "commute". Some lived in houses over 100 years old. I got the VDOT maps and would just ride around finding treasures like that. Ah, the halcyon days of youth.

That article is behind a paywall but thanks. Someone critically injured one of the wild horses last month and they had to put down.

On July 26, 2024, a 10-year-old Banker horse named Bullwinkle was critically injured when he was hit by an off-road vehicle on Corolla Beach in North Carolina's Outer Banks. Bullwinkle was a Banker horse, a breed that has lived on the Outer Banks since the 1500s. He was known for being aggressive and tenacious, and was not used to humans. Bullwinkle was also known for being annoying to other horses.

A visitor who was surf fishing at the time witnessed the incident and reported it. Bullwinkle's injuries were severe, including a broken right hind leg, skin trauma, and injuries to his left hind leg. A veterinarian arrived on Saturday morning to humanely euthanize Bullwinkle.

The Corolla Wild Horse Fund said that Bullwinkle's death is devastating to the herd because he will never produce any foals. With such a small, endangered population, the ramifications of his loss will last for generations.

The one that was hit was hit and run, too, at night. Too many yahoos there now, present company excepted.

The article basically said there are still enough remote thickets not connected to the beach in which they can hang, out of sight. When I did some trapping down there I got into them and they are extensive.

Was quite a wilderness back then. I can tell tales.

I have to laugh at that a bit, and no doubt it was an experience, but once years ago on Assateague Is. the damn wild ponies came waltzing through our campsites as bold as brass, ate everything that was vaguely organic, scattered our gear everywhere and moved on. I mean. who's going to argue with a herd of wild ponies?

Still, it was pretty cool hanging out with them...

Man it's been a busy 2 months! What a whirlwind and SO. MUCH. FUN. We overnighted in Chesapeake last night and head to our favorite campground in the OBX, Frisco Woods this morning at 9. I've been up since 3:30 because I just can't sleep with the anticipation. The weather looks fantastic and we expect minimal impact from Milton. Today I get to visit one of my favorite places on Earth, Cape Point, NC where the Atlantic Ocean and the Hatteras Bight meet. Pics to follow...
