A few hours north of Lockn is the Watermelon Park Festival in September. This is a small festival that has been going on in some form or another for a long time. The real beauty of it is that the park has long frontage on the Shenandoah River. We used to take our tubes upriver and tube down past the music...not a bad way to hang out at festival. Accommodations are pretty basic, tickets are inexpensive, and they will let you camp all week. Very low key affair.

hey, thanks for the tip. dont know a lot of the bands, but for $90, that looks like a fun few days of music. man, i would really love to fit that into my schedule... between mule, lockn, farm aid, and festy experience, that's gonna be tough, but SO damn tempting.... UGH
