I could go on I-81 N from west of Roanoke or I could take 64 E, both are about equal time. It looks like cutting over on 60 or 56 both would bring me in traveling north on 29. I guess I should clarify, is it easier getting into the venue traveling South on 29 or North on 29 because the difference in time for the routes I could take to come in either way is very minimal.

Bill has the right idea imo. I81 to exit 150a near Roanoke, then 460 to Lynchburg and 29N to the fest. Drove these roads many times, usually smooth sailing. Some beautiful country around there too.

We take US60 from the west thru the mountains. Had zero traffic on that road last year and came out on 29

We come in from Louisville, KY and spend the night in Lexington VA, hit 60 to 29. Very scenic drive!

Actually you can manually move the blue line south of Hollins (I did last year) but I didn't do it here. (just trying to help out a fellow member on the road...)
Heck, I don't even trust my updated GPS 100% either, but it's better than nothing if you're not familiar with the area, as some of us are.

I went to school in Lexington but had girls up and down 81 and 29. Running route 60 at night in my mustang with the Allman Brothers in the 8 track was like flying to heaven. My daughter went to Roanoke College so we made many treks through that area recently.
What's missing today are CB's.

Drive time is ~ 3.25 hours, and we will leave MD around 3amish... (Yes, we're from Oregon but we are taking a few vacation days to see DC and Chesapeake Bay....Thanks!

CR&S, that's a good route. too bad it will be dark but when you get off the wretched interstate you could have a nice dawn run though the countryside.

I95 from Alexandria south is one of the worst roads in the east and you can get traffic jams any time, and constant construction. If it were daytime I'd send you on 301 and the Potomac Bridge but your time of day should be OK. Ask a local when you get to Md.

The "long bridge tunnel" would be the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel? One of 7 man-made modern wonders. I have ridden my bicycle over each
of the high rise sections.

If you are driving over it and coming straight back, do your U turn before the toll plaza (it's legal) and save some $$. Check out the
WWII battlements on the north side (go east just N of the toll plaza parking lot). On Rt 13, Onancock is a great town for a ride around
or lunch on the docks on the bay side. On the seaside, you can drive Rt 600 all along the marshes and through the villages mostly 2
lane but never more than a couple miles from 13. Take it between Accomack (town) and toll plaza. On that side, Wachapreague has the
waterfront dining. Lots of history there going back to the early 1600's.
