Arrive from the North or South?

If coming from south of Roanoke I concur with much of that above advice and would hit exit 150 to 220>460>29N.
I've lived in one part of the Valley or another for most of my life so I've taken every one of the possible routes at some point I think.

If you can read (just discovered that image will scale up if you click on it) the 2 routes to Arrington/ Lockn (blue or grey) on one of these images, please vote for the best one based on your knowledge of these roads.... the time difference is small.
Drive time is ~ 3.25 hours, and we will leave MD around 3amish... (Yes, we're from Oregon but we are taking a few vacation days to see DC and Chesapeake Bay....Thanks!

of the high rise sections.
Here's a long feature article about its contruction, 50 years ago:

If you are driving over it and coming straight back, do your U turn before the toll plaza (it's legal) and save some $$. Check out the
WWII battlements on the north side (go east just N of the toll plaza parking lot). On Rt 13, Onancock is a great town for a ride around
or lunch on the docks on the bay side. On the seaside, you can drive Rt 600 all along the marshes and through the villages mostly 2
lane but never more than a couple miles from 13. Take it between Accomack (town) and toll plaza. On that side, Wachapreague has the
waterfront dining. Lots of history there going back to the early 1600's.

sorry folks to drift this topic...
Hotel Charlotte in Onancock? Great dining. Also good and a little cheaper is Mallard's on the water. Get some sweet potato biscuits
from the corner bakery--early before they sell out.
There are no beaches on the seaside south of Assateague you can drive a car to, the 70 mile Great Coastal Reserve is all barrier
islands. Most beautiful beaches, too! But if you want boat access there's a friend who just opened her fishing guide/eco tour/island
taxi and she is a major deadhead! it would pretty much take a day to do that, though. So you can have a nice drive onthe seaside looking
over the marshes but can't get in the water. You can on the bay side at Cape Charles, Kiptopeake and Sunset Beach motel, all at the south
end of the shore.
You can tour the Norfolk Naval Base but i don't think you can get near the shipyards. The Victory Rover is a boat tour for the base;
the carrie B boat tour I think covers Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Metro--big floating dry docks and such--loknig out my office window now..
You get to go through another bridge tunnel heading back north to Deale. Go up 17 to 301 from Hampton/Newport News, not 64/95 one of the most
wretched stretches of road on the east

paper maps. Never fail. combine with local knowledge and get on down the road.
but your route going above Roanoke and then cutting over at Hollins avoids a long stretch of confusing urban surface travel
I went to school in Lexington but had girls up and down 81 and 29. Running route 60 at night in my mustang with the Allman Brothers in the 8 track was like flying to heaven. My daughter went to Roanoke College so we made many treks through that area recently.
What's missing today are CB's.
