maybe the wineries need to reevaluate their business plan if they can't figure out a way to make $ off of 25,000 festival goers passing right by their front doors. I'm thinking a roadside stand selling plastic jugs of their finest would sell well to people heading into the campgrounds

as I ssaid before, the Virginia wines at the low end of their price scale aren't worth it. Festies aren't going to pay $20 for ordinary to mediocre wine.

I drink wine a lot but not at an event like this. Not even bringing a corkscrew. And with the no glass rule, they can't sell any
bottles, which is how they make their money and promote their wares. So they'll set up, do poorly, and whine some more.

also as the article's comments point out, these are two obscure wineries off the track and right at Lockn's driveway, so not a very realistic picture of what other's say.

Most businesses said they didn't make anything extra due to Lockn'. Are most of you guys planning on buying supplies in Nelson County or coming prepared?
We left the fest several times to stop at home and grab a few things or shower. The roads were completely clear friday and saturday, no one ventured anywhere it seemed. We did stop and make purchases in Lovingston, but nothing substantial.
I think the local businesses are still bitter over last year, but they're going about this the wrong way. Instead of negative publicity, they could be getting a ton of business if they did something like a previous poster said and offer free tastings for Lockn' guests. Any kind of incentive, really.
The lady in the article is definitely stretching the truth though. There were more than 2 local businesses, some were from neighboring counties as well but those are still considered local.

Events like these always bring mixed benefits and detriments to the immediate area. Even in the tourist areas like the outer banks
and Virginia Beach the natives gripe about tourists, traffic, crowds, etc. when it is their life blood. We have downtown festivals
in Norfolk and many local merchants, such as a book store, complain that the crowds drive away customers--which is true for that day.
What the gripers fail to realize is the benefit from exposure, and that the tax revenue and wages to the local staff is 'the tide that
floats all boats."
Hopefully there is enough local shopping to make it worthwhile for those merchants providing supplies, but there is the realities that
our arrivals may not work, and that we can't rely on the stocks that we know we find at the Evil Empire of Walmart.
Anyway, the subject article was a weak effort and harldly can be taken to represent the local consensus.

When the lumber, coal and dairy industries all faded in my mountain home town, we started trying to attract tourists (we have the Pine Creek gorge, AKA Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon). Even though it shored up the tax base, everyone bitched about the invasions of "downstaters" or "flatlanders." Now they have out-of-state gas drillers to contend with, so they can really bitch.

Well stated. As an avid wine festival attendee in Central Virginia for the past 25 years I can attest that these two wineries are not well regarded by most serious wine drinkers. If you cannot find a way to take advantage of 25,000 out-of-towners being in your neighborhood for four days you are not promoting your self right.I just can't understand these two wineries. 
If you can't figure out how to profit from thousands of extra people in your backyard, then get out of the wine TOURISM business and go straight to wholesale.
Back when I was doing business development for a VA winery, I would have been chomping at the bit for a major music festival that close. That's where the business relationships with local b&bs, etc come in handy. Lockn is even throwing them a bone by selling their products at the fest.
If they're confident in their wine, why not offer a free tasting to anyone who brings their Lockn ticket stub or wrist band during or after the fest? Lose $5 on my tasting(which they wouldn't have gotten anyway) but make it up in bottle and cheese/cracker sales. Hire a local musician for Monday afternoon for people like me who aren't in a rush home on Monday. Free tasting and one last bit of live music before heading home has my name written all over it. But no, they will close and lose an opportunity. A wise man once said that opportunities sometimes look a lot like obstacles. /rant
