Thursday was pretty underwhelming for me. I enjoyed Vulfpeck despite most of the stage banter being the same as it was at Bonnaroo. I did not enjoy them playing (3-4???) repeats the following day. Why give a band two sets if they can't play.
I also think I've grown out of Umphrey's. Way too much prog-metal for my liking.
That Thursday Ween set was brutal. I left about halfway through. I wasn't a fan going in, though. However, I read somewhere, maybe on Reddit, that it was a set that was tailored for their hardcore base. I can appreciate that and would have loved if Phish did the same. I thoroughly enjoyed their Friday set which consisted of their more accessible songs.
I had seen them before, but Turkuaz was the shit. I bet they grabbed a lot of new fans this weekend.
Phish Friday was great. Granted they went chalk, but that second set was great (despite Trey's phlegm in the opening of BDTNL). JRAD Friday was the perfect follow-on to this. Amazing.
I missed out on a lot of Saturday due to, um, gastrointestinal issues. I actually liked Twiddle. Galactic was underwhelming. Thought the Phil set was fun, if just OK. That Sugaree was SO good though, which leads me to TTB. Wow.
I was already pumped for MMJ and they didn't disappoint. I did wish they dug a little deeper into the catalog, but playing 4(?) covers will do that. BUT, if you're going to play 4 covers, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better combo than that rendition of What the World Needs Now, Marley, Prince, and Bowie. My only complaint is they were a little too loud. My ears were ringing through the earplugs.
I had to leave Sunday. Womp, womp.

1. Phish
2. MMJ
3. Tedeschi Trucks
4. And then everyone else
Some of those everyone else acts were also good, but the headliners on Fri/Sat/Sun were so much better than everyone else that it made even the next best seem lackluster.
I didn't like Ween really. A couple of good jams on Thursday, but I was bored for most of it and didn't brave the sun to catch them on Friday.
Saw at least some portion of every set at the Blue Ridge stage since our campsite was so close to it, so that was nice. Enjoyed all of those with JRAD Thursday being my favorite of those ones.

Disappointments--Vulfpeck (didn't like the falsetto singing, better when Antwan?? was singing; and their banter and presence was a little lacking. Not bad but wouldn't buy a ticket, expected a bit more)
Liked more than expected: White Denin, Moon Taxi (melted my face w/ the Watchtower cover but it was all great), Twiddle. Would definitely buy tickets
Didn't expect to like and didn't: Ween, Umphreys
Like OK, glad I saw them: Phish
Expected to like and they were great: Keller, TTB, Gary Clark, Jr., My Morning Jacket, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Wailers, Phil w/ CRB, JRAD, Donna the Buffalo, Charles Bradley,
Mixed: Phil--One really good set, one set was a bit challenging but that was actually exactly as I expected.
Didn't see, or didn't see enough of to really know (because it was too damn hot and I had to conserve my energy): Local bands, Woods Stage, Galactic, Hard Working Americans, Peter Wolf, Turkuaz, Doobie Decibel

I thought the first phil set had a bit too much going on and didn't do a lot to showcase the drummers, page, anders or even Derek when he sat in, was nice to see the stringudesters on there but think something without so many people would have worked better. still enjoyed it. TTB put on a rockin show especially at the ned when trucks was going off and MMJ was so much fun. definitely was impressed by their closing set.
Friday had and awesome undercard of funk and then Charles bradles was great, did't atch a ton of Peter Wolf exces from a distiance but he sounded really goo. I definitely enhoyed the Friday ween shows and then phish and the laste night jrad again was awesome.
ThursdayUM and JRAD were both very good, I liked most of the ween set but didn' stay the whle time.
DJ Williams Projekt, Vulfpeck, hard working americans white denim were all ones I had never seen befor and liked a lot,, really I was impressed with almost all of the undercard that was there.
one stage is so much bigger and better than before and the sound was better on the side and in the back. so was foot traffic flow insde without the center divider. best set up and overall year for lockn yet. I'm tired now and going to bed. not checking for spelling errors.

Logistics (4) Thought it was a huge improvement from before. Restrooms were clean and plentiful, thought VIP viewing was large enough and fair to everyone, security did a great job, etc.
Weather 0 This was a big deal to me. I'm all about the music and dancing first and foremost. Starting from and ending up at Blue Ridge Bowl with most everything in between. Music fests are my way of purging and getting recentered, and this year it was very difficult to give it my all for every act. I don't party particularly hard and my body is pretty beat up more than usual just because of the heat. The only thing about the weather that was nice was how predictable the crowds were. From 1 - 5PM, I had the place pretty much to myself; 5-7PM I had plenty of space to do what I wanted as the masses started rolling in jockeying for spots and then 8PM on, it was your typical crowd scene. I think the weather screwed over the artists as well....felt bad that some of these acts weren't getting the crowds they deserved.
Music
Thur: Vulfpeck (4) (I thought they were great for both sets, though less talking to the crowd would be nice), Umphrey's killed it (5), and Gene Ween's cover of The Stranger, was the best thing he did all weekend. Ween 0, while I can appreciate not catering to the crowd...not catering to your fan base either seems like pushing it to me. I'm sure they were plenty of die hard Weeniers who loved the brown, but I'm equally sure that a majority of their own fanbase could of used a little less of it Thur.
Fri: Donna (5) Awesome way to start the day, happy vibes. Moogatu (4) very pleasantly surprised will def see again, TurkQwaz (5) everything I hoped for. Charles Bradley (3) nice and mellow, could have used a few more uppity soul songs but that voice was silk. Peter Wolf (3) only caught half as I had to seek some shelter but liked his interpretation of some of his hits and his band wasn't bad....still don't see him as a 'fit' for Lockn. Ween (3) slightly redeemed from Thur. Phish (5) (see below) JRAD (5) When they played St.Stephen, I knew it didn't matter how tired I was, I was going to dance thru everything from then on.
Sat: Keller Grass (5) thought the combo of him and Stringdusters was pure gold. DJ Williams (4), I love Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, and Williams is a local dude..did not disappoint. Moon Taxi (4) pleasant surprise for me, will definitely check out again. Twiddle (5 for both sets), always liked these guys and thought it was solid, though I agree with everyone that if they didn't have enough material for two sets (which they clearly do) why bother giving them two, zero reason for repeats...though I felt the same way about Robert Plant last year). Galactic (3) this was purely weather induced. They couldn't get the crowd nearly as active as they can do...and it wasn't their fault. I couldn't dance as hard as I wanted to. They deserved a later slot. Hard Working Americans (3), I was actually rather disappointed. When they were "on" they were great, but I found it more or less in between alot of their set. Phil (2) one of the biggest disappointments of the fest for me. Was really hoping they'd explore the space with the chops they all had, but it was more or less subdued and canned. I get that Phil was late getting there due to travel, but the early part of that set was just disjointed and looked sloppy. The potential for super greatness was there, and I felt it underperformed. TTB (5) The only thing bad was as soon as MMJ started, I forgot how amazing they had just been. Should always be a staple at Lockn. MMJ (5+++) everything has already been said. Lettuce (5+) almost unfair to go from TTB, MMJ, to Lettuce as I had almost nothing left in the tank....but Lettuce made me borrow some Sunday energy...they were soooooo good!
Sun: (5) Church with Keller is always welcomed. Doobie Decibel (4) another pleasant surprise for me and will go see them again. The Wailers (3) almost exactly what I expected, and it was a good way to dance and still rest up for later. CRB (3) was rather hoping for more but a few good and tight jams in there. Phil II (4) I was going in thinking it would be like before, but this group seemed tighter and one of the more enjoyable P&F sets I've seen. Gary Clark (3) second biggest disappointment of the festival for me. I wanted him to come out and blow the roof off the stage and I kept feeling like at some point they were going to do just that....but then they'd pull back. Tight band, but I thought they could have been spectacular. It could also be my expectations were highest for them. Phish (5)
Phish (both nights): (5) Thought these two shows could easily be mentioned as top tier for the East Coast summer tour, especially this year. Quite a few fantastic runs like that Feugo, Ghost, Gin from the first night and most of the second set on Sunday (Carini>Chalk>Twist, an excellent Light). Everyone was grooving in VIP, even the folks who were seeing them for the first time. I believe many new phans were born.

The winner of this year's Lockn though was the logistics. Shapiro and Co. finally got it right. Our port-a-johns were spotless and serviced multiple times per day, check in was a breeze. The ADA entrance was the shit until they finally figured it out on Sunday. We only went through security once. If we could just push this back 2 more weeks, it would be flawless.
Thanks to all of you for a great time! same time next year!
Lockn': not dying, still Dead
