Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
I thought it was a very nice and needed break to have something different than the standards this year, but now that we have had a break from the standard lets go ahead and go back to the roots. Give Warren / Mule two Thursday slots (including a headlining one) as well as a late night Friday show, multiple UM sets, Multiple Cheese sets, the WSP sit in set again Obviously Dead & Co will be on the radar for multiple headlining sets. Perhaps Neil Young finally gives that makeup performance we have been waiting for. Stevie Wonder would be another great idea for a big name. (is it too early for a 2017 wish list thread?) So GA was better this year and SVIP had a smaller area but got to go back stage ( which was awesome) So it looks like VIP got the short end of the stick.

I was pretty unplugged most of the time I was at the festival, between the lack of reception, and the bright sun making it hard to read the screen, my phone stayed packed away or off most of the time. We didn't know about the schedule changes until later in the day when someone sitting near us told us. Until that, I was so confused about why all the set times were wonky and I thought maybe it was just the heat playing tricks on my mind.
Word is she was not sick but was offended by something tween said.

Sorry I just looked it up and yes she was probably just sick. Someone had told me before it was announced that day and I thought it was probable..

Music Ramblings: We felt like good festy warriors and left with few regrets. We missed EOTO, Donna & the Buffalo, Moogatu, a few minutes of Turkuaz, Jazz in the Woods, 2/3 of DJ Williams, Lettuce, Khruangbin, The Dharma Initiative, and Doobie Decibel. Hydrate and pace. We saw every other note of music played. Best stretches were predictable: Phish>CATS>JRAD left melted minds and happy hearts. Galactic>Hard Working Americans>Phil>TTB>MMJ was just an astounding stretch and everything we hoped for. We simply could not muster more for Lettuce (they visit our area regularly) after that MMJ throw down, and was sad to miss what I heard was a great Lettuce set. JRAD x2 + CATS was a phenomenal late night menu for nights 1 & 2 and everything was on point. I wondered about the CRB show and whether it would be subdued, it was and I thought it set a nice Sunday tone. I thought Phil sets were very solid and the best back-to-back Phil shows I have seen in years. Biggest surprises: White Denim set was awesome, Peter Wolf set ended up really keeping my attention, and that was my favorite Gary Clark Jr set I have ever witnessed live. Having Phish was just plain fun - great music and good energy. Set of the festival was no doubt MMJ. That was epic and I will remember it for the rest of my life. Mayor of Lockn' predictably goes to Neal Casal in my mind. One of the best and most eclectic virtuoso festival-long performances in my time. Space melts with CATS, dirty rock with HWA, bluesy rock with CRB, and great job with Phil. He showed out.
For all of the lineup concerns and bitching, I thought this Lockn' was a triumphant success in terms of the musical experience it produced. We don't go to festivals to sit around camp, and don't skip shows based on skepticism or unfamiliarity. Accepting it was hot and accepting some of the musicians were not as familiar in years past led to an awesome musical journey that added a bunch of new stuff to the playlist catalog.
Future: Where do we go from here? A different and later thread, but I think the outcome/success of this festival will encourage some more blending of music for the future of Lockn. I could see them starting to bring in an Alabama Shakes, Dr. Dog, Beck, or Ben Harper type band each year...the key will be continuing to balance that with the essence of the festival. Similar to having Ween close a night, I think they demonstrated they can still give us the festival we want (need) that honors what the foundation of Lockn' was built on, while blending an artist or two that might appear out of whack to expose new music to Lockn attendees and new attendees to Lockn'.
The future is so bright we gotta wear shades.

Music: missed most of Vulfpeck Thursday, loved Umphreys and most of Ween. Struggled tired through Jrad and left midway through but loved what I heard. Friday had a blast at the meet up, probably had too much fun because I paid for it later. Went back to the main stages for Ween, Enjoyed this set a lot more than the night before. Wasnt a huge fan of the breaks in music but it seemed to go by fast. Phish Friday night was my favorite of their two sets, the "Its Ice" was ringing in my head all weekend and the Ghost>Gin were legendary. Couldnt stand by Jrad so I left after three songs.
Saturday loved Grateful Grass, Mississippi Moon was awesome. While I planned on checking her out, the Brandi Carlisle cancellation saved my drunk ass. I was able to rest up at camp and head in for HWA at 5 instead of 4. HWA was one of my favorites of the weekend, I walked up near the front of the stage and got that dirty southern roll in the mud, wrestle a pig and watch College Football vibe that a great Panic show gives me. Phil was sloppy at points but I love the man and can't complain too much. loved Dire Wolf, Shakedown, Rosalie, and UJB. Phil should never sing a full Terrapin again though. Only real complaint about the line up was too long of breaks between songs. You could tell Phil was mad early in the set, waving his arms and barking orders at people. TTB was incredible, had me dancing all night. And of course MMJ, best set of the weekend. I'm Amazed had me bouncing, the Purple Rain moved me, and of course OBH. Late night I caught the end of Khruangbin, great scene in the woods and those guys were funny. Made it to Lettuce, not a huge Lettuce fan but I enjoyed their set.
Sunday Grateful Gospel great as always. made it in for CRB and found a great seat near the misty fans (need more next year!). Enjoyed their set but took a little nap during. Thought Sunday Phil was better than Saturday although I wish Gary Clarke did more. Really loved Gary Clarke's set, then of course Phish.
Overall an excellent weekend. I had my misgivings about the line up before hand but those concerns were all long gone as soon as I started the drive down. I'll definitely be buying Lumni tickets when they go on sale. As for next year only suggestions I'd make (besides music, cant wait for that thread!) are have more people driving around selling ice (never saw them once at camp this year) and find a way to add more shade structures to the main stage area. It just gets so damn hot during the day and the sun can kick your ass just as hard as having too many beers during the day.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who came to the meet up, especially those who brought gifts, beer, or other trinkets and "treasures". We were beyond moved by your generosity. And special shout-out to SMOSEYWALES for gifting me with a beautiful shell, despite their absence. <3 Thank you SO MUCH for the laughs and good company. I truly feel welcomed into the Lockn' family and have friends for life.
I will keep my thoughts brief:
1. For me, Ween won the weekend. But of course I think that because I am a Ween fan, and they catered their shows (especially night one) to the HC fans. It was truly a "show come true" for me. No surprised many didn't like them.
2. Not a MMJ fan, but I get the appeal. Just not my cuppa.
3. Phish played good shows, I was super excited to get my Tweezer and almost cried tears of joy at hearing a No Quarter. Excellent, excellent, excellent energy. You could tell Trey was really into it and engaged/connected, which is rare of late. Also, those glow sticks were on a late-90's level. I'm glad everyone got to experience it.
4. Keller coming out with Twiddle was GREAT! We love Keller, and I was actually turned on to Twiddle after seeing them live.
5. Grateful Gospel was worth the sunburn. Holy hell, I could see them every day. What a wonderful concept.
We are 75% sure we will return, as we are WSP and Cheese fans, so if they go "back to basics" we would still enjoy it, even though Phish/Ween got us there. I really hope they decide to schedule later in September as well as the heat was TOO MUCH. Day one I suffered heat exhaustion, and we saw WAY LESS music than we wanted to due to the heat/sun. We were truly blessed to have a good view of the stage from ADA stage and our ADA site. But the whole ADA set up... That's for a whole OTHER debate...
Much love... Mandi and Nick <3
