Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
trey with tedeschi trucks. Awesome. I'm going to make some calls to bring this to Lockn 2018. Stand by trey with tedeschi trucks. Awesome. I'm going to make some calls to bring this to Lockn 2018. Stand by I got my Ravi Shankar from the Concert for Bangla Desh. The best part is following the applause from an introductory interlude, Ravi says, "Well if you liked us tuning up so much you'll love the show." But then a whole album side of a great jam. I was disappointed when I went to the Indian Subcontinent that the music didn't sound that way at all; it was all harsh and shrill to my ear. But I was also accused, at the Taj, of "rectilinear consciousness." No, Jeff, not "rectalinear." I did play around on a sitar in a shop in Banares (Varanasi) where Ravi used to teach--and then observed that apparently he taught at all of them. Dumb tourist. Link Wray is up for the R&R Hall of Fame--finally. He was born in Dunn, NC, lived in Portsmouth VA a while but grew up in DC. Lot's of rockabilly talent there--Robert Gordon, Nighthawks, Thoroughgood (Balt) and the best, Danny Gatton. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

Among his significant feats, he is said to have invented the power chord--usually by dropping the 6th string (E) an octave--and Pete Townshend said he never would have picked up a guitar if he hadn't heard it. It had been in some of the early electric blues numbers, but not in R&R.
But a power chard needs distortion, so he wanted a bad-ass sound, and created it by punching holes in his Marshall amp speaker with a pencil--the first fuzz box. I recall that Duane Allman did the same.
His well-known hit Rumble was written when he was playing in Fredericksburg, at a dance at a bowling alley, after a fight. You can hear him at the end going back to his amp, twisting knobs for more vibtrato. When he first played it at the dance, he put the singer's mic on the guitar amp to get the distortion.
The coolest thing to me about Rumble is that it was banned by several radio stations--and it has no lyrics.

My wife, a deadhead since 1969 committed heresy by saying that John Mayer actually plays Better Than Jerry!
I'm pretty sure she was joking, though.

Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Rerprise, 1968
From Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums:
Hendrix's third album was the first he produced himself, a fever dream of underwater electric soul cut in round-the-clock sessions at the Record Plant in New York. Hendrix would leave the Record Plant to jam at a club around the corner, the Scene, and "Voodoo Chile" – 15 minutes of live in-the-studio blues exploration with Steve Winwood on organ and Jefferson Airplane's Jack Casady on bass – reflects those excursions. In addition to psychedelic Delta blues, there was the precision snap of "Crosstown Traffic" and a cover of "All Along the Watchtower" that took Bob Dylan into outer space before touching down with a final burst of spectral fury.

"ELECTRIC LADYLAND INCEPTION
THE PROJECT INSPIRATION: On the anniversary of Jimi Hendrix's death, I had the idea to bring together bands to record a compilation of Hendrix songs. In considering Jimi's catalog of music I'd decided that the best way to pay tribute was to take on his double album masterpiece, Electric Ladyland.
THE PROCESS: While emailing bands on Magnetic Eye Records I realized that this would be a perfect project to create a bigger community around. I reached out to the owners of Ripple Music, STB Records and Hevisike Records and they all expressed interested and helped with selecting bands for Electric Ladyland.
KINDRED SPIRITS: One of the amazing aspects of working on this project has been the of bonds that are developing between the musicians, artists and fans of Jimi's music. I'd already been working with Minneapolis artist David Paul Seymour on and off all year and I knew he was a natural fit for this project. What I didn't know was that in addition to accepting the commission as cover artist for Electric Ladyland, David would also play a large role in this project's success. It was with David's vision and work to we reached outside my network to ask and include bands like TeePee Records, Earthless and Daptone Records, The Budos Band.
We are so grateful to David, TeePee Records and Earthless, and Daptone Records and The Budos Band for their involvement."

Entire album's pretty damn good. Gonna have to find a flac of this one.
Damnit, $20 on The Amazon, It'll be here Friday.
All Along the Watchtower reminds me more of a cover of Dave Masons version that Jimi's or Bob's. Good stuff!
