You go where they point you to set up. Spaces are first come first served.
Bring everything with you.
Don't plan on using the facilities in your RV. If you need a pump out they charge $$$

I also don't think hitching into "town" is viable unless you want to miss a lot of music you paid for. Come stocked up.

I would get there closer to 4:00am. Like smosey said, there really isn't a "side of the road" to pull over to, and the cops are in no mood to hear excuses. Also, the local Walmarts and malls do NOT allow any overnight anything, so be forewarned. Our (the wife and I) experience has been that if you get to the Field of Broken Dreams an hour or two early they'll let you get in line, but before that you could conceivably be turned away.
The search really depends on the mood of the searcher and how busy the line is. Mostly they're just looking for glass and knives, but you seem to indicate you've at least been to Lockn before, so that should be old hat. As well as the fact that there will be cops and dogs. Some RVs get searched more thoroughly, due to there being more area to search; some, I've heard, get right in. Fresh searcher probably means more thorough; tired searcher probably means less...but irritated, so you don't wanna mess with 'em.
I can't imagine an RV would elicit more scrutiny from the fuzz with so many converging at the same time. And I agree with smosey: come prepared to spend all 4 days without going anywhere. They really try to discourage coming and going (bad enough for the local traffic on Thursday and Monday without it going on all weekend) and everything you need can be had...for a price, after all.
As a car camper, that's the extent I can help you. Where's our other RV campers at? We have a responsibility to more than just a circle-jerk within our bubble, you know! Help a brother out!

I'm not sure what you do to protect yourself but I can assure you, the rental contract does not. Deal with reputable renters, reserve early, research the tricks (Google "RV not available") and stay on them.
Driving a rental a long distance eats into the economy with scale with gas expenses, which is why many out-of-towners rent more locally--but also risk getting stranded.
A friend rented an on-site VIP RV. It was pricey. It was also brand spanking new and a short stroll to the stage, a short crawl home.

Both years I've went searches were non-existent. For an Rv it would take a while to do a real search and they know they need to keep the line moving. Not as awesome as the first bonnaroo though when the "security" person asked me (seriously I'm not joking) "do you have anything more than a pound of weed?"

Good advice on the possibility of reserving one locally and it not being available when I arrive to pick it up. I was considering driving up there and renting one, but with all the hotel rooms being booked I would hate to be stranded.
I think I am going to go through Cruise America for the rental, the deposit is only $500 and everything else seems to be solid. Driving from Jacksonville, FL to Lockn as an RV road trip is going to be a blast, hopefully my better half agrees. I figure we will sleep in the day before and leave around 3:00pm. Take out time on the drive and arrive to Lockn between 3:00am and 4:00am.
If anyone thinks of anything else, please share

If this helps, I was in a car for VIP and went in the same way with three friends w/ GA/RV--we all stayed at a friend's about 5 miles away from Lockn. We got on the highway around 5 am together and then around 6 am the line on the dedicated road stopped moving. Started up again then stopped. I think they started getting in around 9-10, and it was slow after that.
One issue was they didn't get the RV gate open as early as they wanted. But they had to reconfigure lots of it due to the storm damage (on top of recent underground utility work) and --I heard--they were trying to let some areas dry out. So let's figure that won't be a factor again.
But at your RV gate, only one of the at least three machines to process tickets was working. Dead batteries, bad wifi, whatever. That's the sort of thing that happens too often at Lockn and I blame CID, on the front line, and management in general for relying on CID. It is a weak and fragile operation throughout, IMO.
And it was so muddy, there was still lots of crazy sliding going on, especially when you consider many drivers aren't familiar with RVs in general and mud-driving in particular, plus being impaired from sleep deprivation.

Oh really!
RV is the way to go. We have done it all three years and had much success.
We have been arriving more towards morning and that has been ok. Thinking about earlier this year. It is true that the Lynchburg Wal-Marts are no overnight parking zones.
The entry/check in/security process is smooth and streamlined. As someone said before they are mostly concerned with getting everyone inside in a timely fashion. Be polite, have ALL of your tickets in hand, don't do anything stupid, have your shit hidden just in case, and your overhead bins unlocked and the coolers closest to the door free of excessive booze and glass.
Same rules apply when going to a fest in an rv or car. Don't be stupid. Don't be getting all lit up anywhere near the fest. Hide your shit.
Good tips on the water tanks above.
Make a hard and fast rule about who gets pooping privledges. If you are helping to pay for the rv you're in, if you aren't then see that blue port-o-john over there... You don't want to be full up on the second day because every random that passes wants to use the facilities.
What supplies will you need that you don't bring? Pack whatever you will need and even stuff you might not need. You have an entire rv so space isn't an issue. You don't want to leave.
Bring a couple of ez-ups to set up for outside shade and rain protection.
Bring a roll of outdoor turf for a rug for under the ez-ups.
I will add more as we get closer.
What happens if I take both?

Yea that is at the Stoney Badger Tavern. Pretty cool of him. He wants a mini Lockn with music and everything. I might have to drive the ten minutes over there and check it out.

But based on the announcement, one reason for the change was to avoid the conflicts with other nearby events (NASCAR, college football) that took a lot of the available support, such as equipment and manpower. Those events also left few RV's available in the state; the new date should loosen things up for you and other renters.
