Glo sticks: Litter, Cliches, or a Coolness Indicator?

Last year at Lockn the otherwise nice crew behind us bought about a zillion Glo sticks and spent the evening throwing them everywhere and laughing. Somehow I got the feeling that they weren't coming back in the morning to help clean up.
so, flingable items at fests: cool, or not cool?

You could make the case that you're keeping the overnight crew employed though, I guess.
I've seen young folks at little fests gather them up so they can throw them again.

On a festival ground it's not that big a deal since it's going to be cleaned anyway, not like around the campgrounds or out on a trail somewhere. We drop other trash like beer cups when in the middle of the mob.
And they are fun; they get re-used by the pickers. Not the same as drink straws in a park.

No cliche option.
I don't bring them, but there was a guy near us with a flag pole at Robert Plant the last night last year, so my friends started making hoops out of them and playing ringtoss. I nailed it on my first attempt. The crowd went wild.

Now, now. People gotta be able to find their crew in the dark. Just wish they would keep them behind the soundboard.
That said, anyone who refers to their totem as a "rage stick" should be boiled in oil.

I agree with that! I tried to think of exceptions and couldn't unless seeds for flowers you don't pick count. Out here even littering dirt is a problem, a big one at that.

An apple core tossed into the woods is not the same as one tossed onto the beach.
Visibility is a big factor as to litter, or not.
It's interesting how we've changed regarding litter over the years. In the early sixties even the socially conscious threw stuff out the window--that most of it was biodegradable was the thinking, but it's still litter. Some would bury or tuck cans or paper out of sight. Butts are now litter, but only recently (even after filters--non-filter is hardly litter if ground into the ground or field stripped). Plastic bags are the worst offenders now.
Go to the third world where all trash is tossed into the gutter, and now, there's a lot of plastic in it. That's where it's astoundingly bad. But then again, they have bigger problems.
(FTR I am obnoxiously anti-litter and pick it up constantly)

Will swallowing the contents of one kill you? No. Will swallowing a teaspon of used motor oil kill you? No, it won't either. But they are both clearly not good for you and spreading around on the ground of a farm is pretty asinine.
I mean they probably won't choke a horse. And after all it's just a glowstick. No it is thousands upon thousands.
I think that they should count your glowsticks coming in and going out. You should have to eat the difference. Let's see Tim, you arrived with 2 boxes off 144 for a total of 288 and you now have 12. Oops, looks like you are going to have to chow down 276. Hope it was worth it dumbass.
By the way here is what the Poison Center has to say.
For Ingestion:
Don't be alarmed if lips and tongue glow for a few minutes.
Wipe the mouth with a clean wet washcloth; go over the tongue and around the gum line.
Give the child up to one-half cup (4 ounces) of water.
For Eye Exposure:
Irrigate exposed eye(s) with a generous amount of room temperature water for at least 10 minutes.
Call the Carolinas Poison Center for ongoing irritation, swelling, pain or sensitivity to light.
For Skin Exposure:
Remove any clothing that is wet with the liquid.
Wash exposed areas of skin well with soap and water.

The photos show disgusting behavior--especially the one of the road. At both lockn's, on move-out, the campgrounds where I was, the people were very good about piling all the trash in designated places: around the upside-down trash barrels. Not perfect but pretty good and nothing like foreign fest fotos (I recall SFX was that way, too?). Can't speak for other areas. And during the fest I thought the grounds were all in good shape, litter-wise.
But anyway: I agree with all the opinions here; none are wrong.
BTW Waycha, that won't be the first time my commentary has been wadded up and thrown back at me, but usually it's figuratively. If you do it literally, at least pause to have a beer with me first (we'll recycle the bottles).

Lockn campgrounds do get pretty much self policed as do almost all of the smaller fests. The Camp Barefoot crowd has been exceptionally good in that respect. But Bonnaroo is a different story. Especially if the weather is inclement. It is a disposable festival. Buy a cheap tent, cooler and chairs for the weekend and then walk away. And if you're walking away from a tent you sure aren't making sure your garbage is gathered and your recycling sorted.
