Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
Had the pleasure in Australia but luckily we were in the bush most of the time. But I was often freaked out as a hitch-hiking passenger there and in NZ--I'd look up, scream, and try to grab the wheel too often to be welcomed back. In Italy, I hadn't driven a stick in years, and the 5 speed diesel Opel wasn't like my old Landcruiser. The shift spots were about an inch apart so there was an equal chance of hitting 1 or 3 or 5 on any forward shift. So gear grinding clutch pumping stick jamming rolling backwards on the 1 1/2 lane curvy mountain road with a truck full of wine bottles rolling at you, did indeed provoke commentary from my ashen passengers. I recall the old saying, "I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather did, not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car." Good to know about those kits. With their proliferation, and the detail they now give, and low prices, it's only logical that many are hoaxes and scams. Reverse fortune telling, really. But with the legit use of genetics in genealogy (sound redundant?), they are finding a surprisingly large percentage of people, from back in the day, whose male parent was not their father. Messing around was apparently very common, but with living results that may not be as common after the advent of better birth control and its acceptance during marriage. Good to know about those kits. With their proliferation, and the detail they now give, and low prices, it's only logical that many are hoaxes and scams. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

We took our children on a similar trip to Italy, and although I was more interested in medieval era, the renaissance and reformation, and the art from that period, I found late in the trip (we ended in Rome) that they were not interested in that, but were very taken by Roman empire sights. Wish I had focused on that earlier.
We packed in carry-ons only, both to avoid the inevitable lost luggage and to insure there was room in the rental. But we packed light bags inside that we filled for the return trip.
Have you ever driven there? It's easy to get from town to town and damn near impossible to find a location in a town, whether a small hill town or Rome. Get a good map, not a tourist map. Understand that building numbers are random and street names change, usually without signs. And every time you make a wrong turn and drive through a historical area--which is not marked as such--they take your picture and send you a $100 ticket when you get home. So allow at least an hour in each place to find your destination. And another hour to find and get to your parking lot.
Good plan to drive up to Orvieto to start. Nice town and easy to get to from the airport. Get there and then adjust to the jet lag.
What also appealed to the children was getting a college-aged guide at the major sites. My children (girls, college age) weren't interested in my narrative but we lucked into a female grad student at the Coliseum and booked her for the next day at the Vatican. Florence has good guide companies and the good guides know to tailor the presentation. But you can also get stuck with old guides with indecipherable accents.
I'm jealous!

Oh fun! Super jealous. We like to travel with our kids, they are fortunately very interested in learning about other places and cultures.
My stepfather was Sicilian and I am dying to compare his traditional Italian fare (which was amazing) to authentic Italian food some day. I'm really hoping to get to Europe in the next two years. We travel a lot as well but spend way too much on traveling to see music (duh). Hopefully we will be living there in the next five years (once I get into consulting- my area of expertise is taken more seriously there than here).

My first time it took two hours to find the hidden underground garage in Rome. My second time, I thought I was smart by returning it to the Rome train station. I gave up after an hour, parked it overnight and walked around the next day to find it: hidden in an unnamed alley behind the train station, in an unmarked door to a parking garage, and up on the third level. For sure, it will not be at the # and street they give you.

Funny, I don't mind driving in New York city.
But I loved driving the Italian countryside, whether the "interstate" or the country roads. My passengers were not as comfortable with it, though!

I was on a biz trip to Ireland and was driving a POS rental car in the Black Mountains on a Sunday night. Started snowing. Got crowded into a ditch on a skinny road, realized I had a flat tire. Got out and found two flats. And the spare was flat. Walked to a farmhouse, lady of the house called the local mechanic. He asked me where I was and frankly I had no idea. Lady explained to him. Mechanic shows up in the snow, swapped me two well used tires and wheels for my two flat ones, charged me about $10.
I like the Irish.

Then my sister did an Ancestry DNA kit, and no Irish came back in her DNA. Which makes her either A: Not my father's daughter, or B: the kit is a crock.
But she surprisingly found out that we are like 17% Scandinavian, with no links to our tree, so I am assuming the Irish are actually Scandinavians who migrated.

we did two dogs from the same litter and it gave them no maternal connection. So my nieces ( twins ) did it and came out completely different for them. When confronted they said it was recreational only and refunded our money

We went with Ancestry, which is overseen by the Mormon church, so I hear. We then did my grandfather who had almost 0% Western European (German) in him, despite his mother being first generation German (Wagner) and growing up in a very German household.
My in-laws bought their DNA kits on Black Friday. Anxious to see the results, as I'm convinced Nick is as Scots as they come.
