when I went to the bourbon classic in Louisville KY a few years ago I learned from the bourbon heads that Old Forester is the best daily drinker/mixer. I swear by it now. But due to the bourbon craze, many low-ends have vastly improved. Four Roses is one, but I think all the well brands (Jim Beam, Evan Williams, etc.) have stepped it up. Rebel Yell says they improved, but I don't see it. Gotta agree with smosey; this is what Old Crow is made for. Save the sippin' whiskey for...well,sippin'.
Oh, and kudos to you rib roast guys. Too many people treat the Yuletide like Thanksgiving II. Wish I had enough mouths to justify the expense.

Harris Teeter has choice rib roasts for $6.99--they have good meat here. Plus they had a $20 coupon for spending over $100.

When we were in Louisville for drinking/taking the women folk to see Bobo & the You2s we had dinner at an okay place named The Silver Dollar. They were out of the ribs that we wanted but were still close to the next bar, Sergio's World of Beer, that we wanted to go to. We were sitting at the bar and I ordered a shot of bourbon as an aperitif. The bartender asked we which bourbon as they, like every other bar in Louisville, had a wall full of them. I told him I wanted the one that was distilled closest to where I was sitting and I was served Old Forester. 2 miles away but as it turns out Angel's Envy is about 2 blocks closer.Gotta agree with smosey; this is what Old Crow is made for. I am not cooking for Christmas dinner. It has never been a thing with us. My family always had a brunch at my parents that lasted as long as anyone could swallow another morsel. There was a ham involved but no goose or roast. Since it is just Pam & I this year we hadn't really made any plans so our friends invited us over to join their families for dinner. I asked what I could bring and my apple, walnut & cranberry pie was requested. Also a side. Hmmm, what is my families traditional Christmas side dish? Oh yeah, there isn't one so I will just have to make one up. I first thought of the classic "Roasted Asparagus with Hollandaise". It will pair perfectly with the ham that is being served. Then while making sure that I remembered Hollandaise correctly I ran across "Fresh Asparagus and Hollandaise Casserole". Which then led to "Cauliflower-Goat Cheese Gratin", "Broccoli and Cauliflower Mac n Cheese" and "Brussels Sprouts with Balsamic and Cranberries" in quick succession. I ALWAYS overdo it so I am very apt to make ridiculous amounts of at least 2 if not 3 of those. Plus a pie.

Trash
2 ½ cup Corn Chex
2 ½ cup Rice Chex
2 ½ cup Wheat Chex
2 ½ cup Cherrios
2 ½ cup Mixed Nuts
1 cup Pretzels (any size/style broken into bits)
1 cup Garlic Bagel Chips (broken into bits)
1 stick Butter
4 TBS Worcestershire sauce
1 ½ tsp Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning (or other season salt)
¾ tsp Garlic powder
½ tsp Onion powder
½ tsp White pepper
Preheat oven to 250 F.
In a LARGE bowl mix together all the dry ingredients.
In a microwave safe container melt the butter then whisk in the remaining ingredients. Or do it on the cooktop.
Drizzle ⅓ of the butter mixture on the dry ingredients and mix. Repeat for the remaining butter mixture in 2 stages.
Spread evenly on 2 large pans and place in preheated oven for 1 hour. Stir 2 or 3 times then put in large airtight container.

For my mashed potatoes, I'm going to do twice-baked, with the center being horseradish, sour cream and chive.
A friend recently made mashed potatoes with goat cheese in them--gave it a great flavor, a little edge.

Just whipped up a 1/4 batch. Used Calvados instead of Apple Jack Brandy but since it is French Apple Brandy, which I had, I figured it would be fine. It was rather tasty. We had a few seasoned oyster crackers I had mixed up, so Mr Buddy crushed them up for the breading. The seasoning was not over powering and actually complimented the oysters quite nicely.

We traditionally use crackers, but these were highly seasoned for snacking, so we weren’t sure how they would work. A nice discovery.
