Lockn's Reputation

People hear a made-up statistic and repeat it, never stopping to think whether it is likely to be true, and certainly never trying to verify before repeating.

Sometimes part of the stat is correct and the rest wrong: 200 drug treatments for the weekend, some heroin OD's the first night or over the weekend, etc.

200 is roughly 1% of the crowd so we know that figure is not plausible. My BIL is an ER doc in Hampton and they see several drug cases when Phish plays there--so figure one night, 12,000 people IIRC, several incidents to get a likely base line.

Some people like to take a statistic they happen to like and embellish it--so 20 heroins become 200. Some people don't remember correctly and repeat it with bad info.

But as bad as the people who start them are the people who repeat them without thinking. And our world has become so crazy that almost anything is believable, even if only half of it is true.

Same lady also claimed that there was rampant use of flakka at Lockn which, according to her, was a mixture of heroin and fentanyl.  Not true on either count...

Well, on the subject of Lockns' reputation, but in a totally different vein...

It would help the reputation if vendors would pay their meal taxes to Nelson Co.

One of my HS classmates has worked as an EMT at every Lockn'. He says they get some people freaking out on bad trips. Mostly it's injuries related to drunken gravity experiments gone awry.

200 ODs from heroin? Just not true. 20,000 ODs from fun? Okay, that I'll believe.

Funny, I have friends who won't even consider coming to Lockn based on rumors like these. Utterly stupid and you just can't change the minds of people intent on believing these false statistics. Shame, but more dancing room for us...

I think it is because they believe the lies they have been told in the drug war.  It is not that those things don't happen, it is just that they are far safer and far less likely to lead to overdose or medical emergencies than people have been told.

It's precisely due to these types of misconceptions that I don't tell anyone at work that I go to music festivals or Phish shows. "Going camping in the mountains with friends" is about as much as I tell them.
