My opinion: Tix sales will be fine if not greater than last year. I've been to every lockin cept the first year and last years was the biggest turnout yet and that's considering a ton of people didn't go because they hated Phish and didn't want to be around the younger crowd of fans. This year reminds me more of year 1 and 2 combined so your going to get a little bit of an older more mature crowd. With Panic scaling down the number of shows they play this year your going to get the dedicated WSP fans like my friends and I who must get our fix so they'll all be at lockin and peach. My girlfriend and I are going to Bristow for Dead and Co and were bringing a first timer to the jamband scene who is also going to lockin this year. We also have friends driving all the way from Texas that went to first year and have not been back since who are finally making their return for this year! Down in Wilmington, NC I have talked with a ton of people in our scene and a ton of them are going this year because of the heavy Dead presence + Panic + Fogerty + Ump + Moe etc....point is this year is going to be a smoker, you book the bands the fans will come! 
I think sales will be fine, but I'd be willing to bet a mortgage payment that there won't be more people than last year.
Agree that Panic fans will come, but not as many as would have if they were playing two nights. Many will go to Peach instead or to one of the other multi-night destination runs they are doing (Red Rocks, St Auggy, Vegas in the fall). Or they'll just do Saturday tickets at Lockn.

I personally loved last year just as much as the years before but then again I love all Jam bands and I love Lockin...I'd be going anyways. Oak Ridge has become my home away from home/my happy place!

I really do think it's odd that they didn't end up having Panic do 2 nights this year though. Cheese I can see because they are kinda going full-on with that vibe on Thursday and plus they still have two sets that night. But I fully expected to see Panic headline one night and have an earlier set another night. It's not like they have any other gigs immediately before or after Lockn and nothing additional ever got announced involving Herring.

Let's face it. Everything has been downhill since they changed the dates to keep me away. I was the source of the magic, and if they don't change the dates, the festival is doomed.

Unfortunately nothing can shake me loose that close to the start of the fall semester. Dates must change. Otherwise...I can retire in only 11 more years.Let's face it. Everything has been downhill since they changed the dates to keep me away. I was the source of the magic, and if they don't change the dates, the festival is doomed.

By "competition" I was thinking more of Peach. Like there are probably a lot of folks that are not going to do Lockn' AND Peach, and Lockn' doesn't have much more than Peach, considering the cost difference.
I have to disagree with this. I don't really feel like there is a lot of competition. DeadCO & TTb would be be great but it's not a festival killer by any means. Really don't see that they need much help and certainly don't anticipate a loss. I don't read anything into this one day extension. Probably just had more to do with the last day being a Sunday more than anything, who knows.They have a lot of competition this year. And they don't have Dead & Co. or TTB...
There's nothing that's going to help them this year. But it could mean big changes for next year, especially if they end up with a loss.
Being an eternal optimist is not always what it's cracked up to be...

I go to Lockn and not to others due to location.
There are so many factors that drive sales that looking to measure them on your personal reasons is anecdotal projecting--as irrelevant as my comment above. OTOH studying correlations--such as location to population base--would be valid.
Excepting of course anecdotal projections from this forum--this IS the magic eightball and the promoters better be paying attention!

Peach costs are deceptive. It LOOKS less expensive. But it's Live Nation. Last year I think I paid $65 in fees on 2 GA tix and a tent camping pass. And don't even get me started on the whole issue of $300 for an RV spot with no hook-ups (on gravel no less).By "competition" I was thinking more of Peach. Every time I think about adding Peach, The thought of either paying for an off-site room (not my preferred choice for a festival), paying $300 for an RV spot with no power (what a deal!), or camping on a slant makes me say, "Thanks, but no thanks, Lockn' here I come."
Besides, I'm a Virginia boy.

I also go to Lockn for the location and because it's a super easy drive from NC. Love the Peach lineup, but at this point realistically if I'm going to a fest in any given year then it's going to be Lockn. Not going to be able to make it, but would be there every year if the fates allowed.
I don't think many people from the south are going to do Peach instead of Lockn, but I do think Peach will cut back on the number of people who come to Lockn from elsewhere in the mid-Atlantic. Particularly if they are a Panic fan.

I live in PA...about two hours from where Peach is held. And I would probably go every year. Except for the whole August thing. Last year I sent Worf for the whole fest, but because of work I was only able to be there Friday evening until Sunday morning. It's not worth it for that short a time. We tried it once. But probably just a one-time deal.

"The whole August thing" is probably my biggest deterrent as far as doing Lockn' this year. I'm genetically engineered to live in a bog as it is, so four straight days of 90+ degree heat is probably taking years off my life. I love Mule, but hearing them do Blind Man In The Dark for the eighteenth time is probably not a good trade off for leaving my children fatherless before absolutely necessary.
So while Wanee & Hulaween, as well as Delfest, are farther drives for me, they are held at times of the year when spending entire days outside is a little more desirable. And that the aforementioned make showers and flushing toilets available to us non-VIP riff raff is a nice touch as well.
That being said I am probably picking up a Saturday ticket for Lockn' today. Gotsta get my Panic fix, and if they're throwing in Greensky, Keller and Fogerty as well then I think I can handle extreme temperature discomfort for one day. I'm not a total wimp.

If only Lockn' were closer...I'd consider coming for Saturday as well. But a 6 hour drive for a single day is a non-starter.

There is no appreciable difference in the weather in Virginia between the last week of August and the first week of September. In fact, September can be terribly hot here (Indian summer).
Last year it was pure happenstance that it was extremely hot. It was also extremely hot at L2 and cold at L3.
The only real difference between the old September dates and the new August dates is the effects driven by the many different schedules involved, and the dividing line of Labor Day, the traditional division between summer and fall.

I wasn't comparing old and new Lockn' dates. I was stating that April & October in Florida are generally nicer temperature-wise than Virginia in the summer. This creates an overall better experience for me personally which is why certain other festivals are getting my money and use of vacation days off work.
