from the article above, interesting that he was a jazz drummer, as was Jaimoe to Butch Trucks and in a way, Hart to Kreutzman. Makes me want to go back and listen more closely to what he's doing there.

Probably one of the smallest drum kits especially when playing for 60 or 70 thousand people.

He wrote 12 No. 1 hit songs, with 26 more that reached the Top 10, including the No. 1 international pop crossover hit "Harper Valley PTA" and "I Love", which reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. He is included in Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Songwriters."
Just saw that he went to Roanoke College and lived in the WVA-VA_KY area where he was a disc jockey.

"Commander Cody" died at age 77 from cancer.
George Frayne, who as leader of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airman enjoyed a cult following in the 1970s with such party and concert favorites as “Hot Rod Lincoln” and “Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)," has died.

A big favorite of mine in college and got me into Western swing; their jump blues and big band novelty songs connected with my love of that music and the funny songs like Smoke Smoke Smoke my mother would sing. I loved the way the old music was adopted by the rockers at the time, and us partiers, showing the eternal nature of good music with American roots.

"Last train to Clarksville" and "what am I doing hanging 'round" come to mind to me where he shines, and Taj Mahal capitalized on Giant Step. I need to check but I think they were all Mike's songs. But Boyce/Hart was a formidable pair, and I recently learned they were writing out of Charlottesville!

Meat Loaf -- the singer with some monstrous hits -- has died at the age of 74.
The singer's manager, Michael Greene, confirmed Meat Loaf died Thursday night. Sources with knowledge tell TMZ ... he was supposed to attend a business dinner earlier this week for a show he's working on -- "I'd Do Anything for Love" -- but the dinner was canceled because he became seriously ill with COVID. Sources tell us that condition quickly became critical.
Our sources say Meat Loaf has been outspoken about COVID, railing with folks in Australia recently about vaccine mandates. We do not know if he was vaccinated.
Greene added that Meat Loaf's wife and 2 daughters were by his side when he passed away.
Meat Loaf was one of the great rock singers of all time. His 1977 "Bat Out of Hell" album sold an astounding 65 million copies. That album produced several hits, including "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad," which charted at #11 on Billboard.
Meat Loaf followed up with a sequel years later -- "Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell" - which produced a number 1 hit, "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." He won a Grammy for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance.
Meat Loaf also appeared in a ton of movies and TV shows, including "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," "Spice World: The Movie" and "Fight Club" He also performed in the musical "Hair," both on and off-Broadway.
His real name was Marvin Lee Aday. As for how he acquired the name of a delicious meal ... his football coach named him Meat Loaf because of his weight. His first band was called Meat Loaf Soul.
Now get this ... his first album was a duet with a singer named Stoney and it was released on Motown.
We last got Meat Loaf in NYC back in 2019, where he told us why his stage name should appeal to vegetarians and vegans alike.
BTW ... Meat Loaf was a vegetarian from 1981 to 1992. In 2019, he tried becoming a vegan. He once said, "There have been vegetarians who wouldn't speak to me because of my name." In fact, he was a big fan of singer k.d. lang and wanted to meet her but he says she refused because of his name. He says he stopped being a fan after that!!

Stoney was the very talented Shaun Murphy who later sang back up for him, Bob Seger, featured in Little Feat and is now a great solo artist.Now get this ... his first album was a duet with a singer named Stoney and it was released on Motown.
Meatloaf kind of touches my heart, back in college (Catholic all girls' school), we called into a radio station in town where he was giving an interview. We invited him to come hang out with us after his show in town. He said his manager was screaming no, but he would try. Guess what? He showed up! It wasn't anything out of Animal House, just a nice guy hanging out with his fans ( only a few geeks - myself included- hung around to see if he would really come) and giving away merch. This is truly one of my favorite memories. He actually showed up! Anyway, I am saddened by his passing.

RIP Marty from the Dresden room in LA. Anyone ever see these two? We went there one night and then ate in the dining room with giant white leather Scarface booths. I had the lamb with mint jelly. We saw some movie star who I didn’t know.

Ian McDonald, a co-founder of pioneering progressive rock band King Crimson and stadium rock hitmaker Foreigner, has died. He was 75.
A representative said McDonald died Wednesday at his home in New York City. Son Max McDonald said his father had been suffering from cancer.
