Having just gotten back from a trip that went all over the balkans and Hungary, I can say strongly that Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro are just freaking gorgeous.

I think you'd have an amazing time in Kotor, Montenegro. It's like Dubrovnik but without the tourists. Fantastic food and fantastic sights. Easy passage into Bosnia and Herzegovina which is equally gorgeous.

For natural beauty though, you can't beat Slovenia.

Many years ago we backpack travelled Yugoslavia, primarily the coast, and loved it. A great blend of natural beauty, cheap lodging, peasant food and wine, and medieval history. Rab Island was a gem. We just started at the southernmost part of the coast near Albania and worked our way up. The interior had little to offer, though; typical Bloc country.

Latvia was cool; dropped in on a cruise a few years ago.

I went to Berlin before the wall fell, in 1975, and again c. 2008. A really interesting city especially seeing the new development in the formerly Eastern section. Interesting modern history. Food in Germany is not much to write home about. In West Germany I was in the north near Bremen and also the Romantic Way (Rothenburg) and recommend the latter more than the former. Can't speak to Bavaria.

There are some great train trips, not just the "Orient Express" high end types, through that part of Europe. A good way to see it.

I did this motorcycle tour of the high Alps a few years back. Good company, good food, good hotels. Some amazing mountain passes, some definitely not for the faint of heart. A 120 mph stretch on the Autobahn was fun as well.

i also ended up in an ad for some gear I liked after we climbed the Stelvio pass. Only one guy crashed.

Clearly I have no potential for a career in modeling.

Just got back from 2 weeks in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and the bulk of the trip in Vermont. My girl was so happy there we are talking about moving back. She was raised there and showed me all of the cool locals spots for skinny dipping and drinking beer by the fire. Beautiful waterfalls in the granite, and trails not crowded with tourists.
There is so much more history there than out here in California. I really had a good time.
