2018 Weather

We're now at the point where we can see a (largely inaccurate, I'm sure) forecast. After the standing water and mud at A Bear's Picnic, I'm just as interested in the HINDcast. What's it been doing there? A lot of PA's under water, and even what brief respites we've gotten haven't been lengthy or arid enough to dry anything off or out. 

Whaddya think? Will we need hip waders for Lockn or what?

Yep...pack that rain gear (even if the forecast is sunny). 

What I see, first, is moderate temps, mid-80's day and mid-60's night. That's good.

The standard pre-printed weather in August is "partly cloudy with occasional thunderstorms." How can you go wrong with that? But the good news is that it's not calling for a wash out, or hovering rain event like you get there with a tropical system.

If there are daily rainstorms they will drain, soak in or dry off, so no standing water issues. The problem comes with steady half-day soaking rains (like L3 Thursday), and I don't see that predicted.

Of course heavy foot traffic on thin grass--the showfield--will be a surface mud factor but not the ankle deep like you saw before.

Someone in the area like TOO knows the current surface condition and if it is wet, if it will dry out in 9 days.

Lizard is right that we have to set up our camps so we can button them up, and have tents secured, daily in case the traditional storm comes in.

I had no rain gear so I got soaked. Sprinted back to my campsite, almost ran into a fence trying to do so, and came back to see my friends having beers laughing at me after I looked like a disturbed wet animal. Would have loved to stay but that rain was too much. Great show up until then though

it happens. Ah those were in the good old days when you could wheel your cooler up to the blue ridge stage and drink your pre-purchased beers during the late night. My friends left to get beers for the show that night, I decided to stay and hold down the fort. They never made it back, but at least I got one more song and a good story out of it.

yeah I've seen them too, I think it'll be ok. I survived Lockn '15 and Peach '16, thats kind of my barometer for intense festival weather at this point and I dont think it will be that bad.

wise decision....AND warm socks...sure would be a shame to miss late nights because you are cold 

Me too.  Literally swam back to the train that night.  What a second set they had planned for us too.  

Forecast looks pretty good. “Chance of storms” is standard fare for August in central Virginia. I would be ready for rain on Sunday.

It has been chilly overnight. Unusual for August. We spent last weekend watching the Perseid meteor shower each night (Thur - Sun). Great show but long sleeves and a throw needed in the wee hours.
