Thanks worf. I've been on keto so I'm sticking to that as closely as I can without asking Mrs. TOO to cook too much. I'm trying to be as respectful of her needs as well. When people bring you food they don't always ask if you have any special needs or requests so we are just grateful for what they bring and eat the bread and pasta. A little bit won't hurt. I will try to be mindful of the weight gain. 
TOO, after the 60 days of assal horizontology, you will absolutely fall in love with the Darth Vader boot they give you after that. I guarantee it. Watch your diet, and try not to drink too much - the inactivity is brutal on your system. I'm sure you won't balloon up the way I did*, but the potential for weight gain is less than ideal.If we owe TOO a beer every time he falls on his ass, we're going to go broke very quickly.

That happens when TOO is Just. Fucking. Tired. of the restrictions he has been living under and turns into a raging demon tired of using a scooter just to get a beer.

*I had never broken a bone before, much less a joint, and having no basis for comparison I didn't know the pain I was experiencing after the initial surgery was not normal. People always tell you,"With a broken ankle, you're never back to 100%." so I hobbled around for the better part of a year and a half before getting another x-ray and opinion.
Friday evening after surgery I felt pretty good. Yesterday after the nerve block wore off, well I'm not gonna lie, that was pretty rough. I think I've got the pain meds working now as today has been pretty good so far with my goal being to stop taking them ASAP.

I didn't get an epidural but the nerve block was on top of knocking me all of the way out. I told the anesthesiologists that I woke up during the middle of my last colonoscopy and they laughed at me and said, don't worry we got you bro, that won't happen here and it didn't. I remember them strapping down all four limbs in the operating room and then 2 hours later the doctor telling me that the surgery was a success. The next hour coming out of that drug-fueled ride felt amazing. The next day, not so much lol.Today was a good day and that's all I could ask for...

My head was in a helmet to keep me from moving much, which in turn cut both side of my head, ending up with 3 stitches on my head. Good news from the office...my work is going to let me work from home for the next two months meaning I don't have to burn up all of my vacation and I don't have to go on disability. I've got great disability coverage but eventually it goes to 60% pay, no bueno. My company has been really good to me over the years, for that I am thankful.

I can't say that this is the issue, but you have to come clean with the anesthesiologist about any substance use and ideally refrain for three days prior. Even if you're not a regular partaker and those three days would have happened by default anyway they need to know that you are...experienced.

I agree. They didn't ask about any past drug use and if they didn't think it was relevant who am I to volunteer that info. I'm clean so I answered those questions honestly. The problem with me is I have a very high tolerance to pain medication. I've never really taken much before so I have very limited experience with it. They gave me morphine in the rescue squad. i didn't feel it. They gave me fentanyl. Nothing. More fentanyl. Still didn't feel it. In fact it took me about three cycles of double dosages of Percocet before it started to manage the pain Saturday. Sunday I cut back to the minimum I felt necessary. So far none today. I can't say that this is the issue, but you have to come clean with the anesthesiologist about any substance use and ideally refrain for three days prior. Just to be clear, you mean you didn't experience much pain relief, right? Because it doesn't make you feel inebriated when you're in legit pain. Glad it's subsided some; double doses of Perc is a dangerous game.

I didn't experience much pain relief, at first. When I say double doses I just meant two tablets, as prescribed. Prescription said take 1 to 2 tablets as needed for moderate to severe pain every 4 to 6 hours as needed. I was taking two every three hours for a while to find relief. Still didn't exceed the maximum dosage for 24 hours. I was taking one every 5 to 6 hours yesterday. Down to zero today. No fucking way I'm walking out of this addicted to opiods, that is NOT an option!Just to be clear, you mean you didn't experience much pain relief, right? You're playing it smart. Too many people unintentionally get hooked. Often it's by running to the pills at the slightest discomfort. Fun is fun, but serious is not.

You'll be fine. No doctor worth his salt would give you access to enough to form a habit nowadays anyway. It's worth being cautious, but some fears in that arena really are overblown. Just like with a New Year's resolution, it takes an average of three weeks to make something habitual. That's about when I started getting dopesick, and that was 800mcg of pharma quality fentanyl every day. Still, no reason to be cavalier.
Smose makes a good point, but it can be tricky because pain meds, even OTC NSAIDS, don't work as well if you wait until the pain is unbearable. The good news is some recent studies seem to indicate that after the first few days there's not much to be gained by taking them at all. People who were switched to prescription-level acetaminophen or ibuprofen reported no significant elevation in pain. I know Sue always manages to only take them for a couple days.
Get plenty of rest. No matter what the pathology, the human body heals best in a resting state. Take good care of yourself, and if the boredom/sloth starts to get to you, call, text or PM and I'll be happy to entertain you.

Mrs. Wales swears by (and sells) the CBD products. The cream made me think about the similar cure-all I found travelling in SE Asia--Tiger Balm--so I hauled out an old jar of it.
Many of the ingredients in CBD balm and Tiger are the same or similar, and the percentage of canniboid in the CBD is minimal. So I am interchanging between the two to try an unscientific comparison, and finding similar results.
I can't speak to the oral applications.
of course, our hero can't easily poke some balm down in his cast, and shouldn't. But with an injury like that, one tends to get offset pains elsewhere from immobility or sitting or sleeping akimbo. Might be worth a try.

I've never found that opiates are very good at pain relief - they don't really dull the pain as much as make you not care that you're in pain.
The right combo of CBD, medicinal marijuana, and Irish whiskey, though, can work wonders.

I think a lot depends on an individual's tolerance level. I find they still work great after surgery, and they only ever trust me with a week's worth of strictly-for-squares Vicodin. But I can't stand being hot, nauseated, itchy, constipated, the difficulty breathing, and everything else that comes with the system-wide slowing down of processes associated with opioids. With that many side-effects, it's almost puzzling why anyone (self included) would ever get hooked. And between that and the danger, it's sorta shocking that they're prescribed at all.Good to hear things went well with the surgery and you're on the heal! <--this

It's peculiar - I always said, as far back as high school; long before medical was even a gleam in its old man's eye, that cannabis was good for pain. Furthermore, I stated that it doesn't so much alleviate said pain, but makes you not care. Again, to quote the eminent philosopher smosey wales: your mileage may vary.
TOO $ , what about benzodiazapines? You might need anxiety meds in case you're...
