Apparently they are still waffling on what to do, definitely a kerfuffle. Some are already in Mexico. Some are on planes otw reading this and some are trying to decide whether to get on their flights or bail. Damn I feel for these folks.

They tried hard to provide a good experience given the circumstances. I'll give them credit for that. But it's a bit late to cancel an event starting tomorrow that takes a day to get to.

Yeah, management should of had all the band, staff, crew & production people in Mexico 5-7 days early and had all the “talent” quarantined off site to prevent exposure. If everybody couldn’t agree to that then they shoulda pulled the plug. They shoulda never announced Hamilton until he was “in country” & cleared to play. After Bill bowed out & Mayer got the VID, they limping into Mexico… egos, greed & an unrealistic vision of the reality of the situation lead them to try and pull off a miracle… ala Woodstock 50. While respect them trying to pull it off, they have a couple thousand people in route or on site, that had to jump through hoops galore to get there & now they gotta turn around and jump through them again just to get home, god forbid they got exposed in route, test positive & have to stay 10 days for nothing. Even with them giving full refunds (in 60-90 days) & honoring the stays of people already there, it’s still a bad look.
This could be this band’s Coventry moment… people may walk away & not come back. This hurts not only Dead & CO’s Brand but also the Grateful Dead’s.

We are scheduled to fly to Jamaica next Tuesday for DSO’s Jam in the Sand. As of now it is ON but I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets canceled as well. I just hope if that’s the case they make that call sooner rather than later.
If they cancel we get our money back (except for airfare). If we test positive before we go our insurance will kick in and pay us back. If we get there and then they cancel we are screwed. We are doubly screwed if we test positive and have to quarantine there for 14 days in an isolated room. This fun vacation getaway has become very stressful!

I don't think this will have any effect on the GD brand. They'll still sell out every Dave's Picks release and any other audio compilation release that they come up with.They tried hard to provide a good experience given the circumstances. that's really too bad it worked out that way. Unlike Fyre there's a legit reason. Perhaps they pushed too hard to keep it going, with bad consequences, but maybe other events were cancelled unnecessarily or too **soon**. It's a tough call to make.

It reminds me of Woodstock 50th Anniversary… in both cases right up to the last minute, despite everyone saying this is a bad idea, talent pulling out, refunds demanded, etc… they both were like “No, it’s gonna be cool”.

They survived Altamont, I think they can endure this. Dave Grohl broke his leg on stage and then had a thrown made to keep the show(s) going. He was seen as a hero. Maybe they just didn’t want the music to stop. Do any of them need another house at this stage in their life? Let’s assume positive intent and poor execution, both are consistent with past behavior. I don't think this will have any effect on the GD brand. I think as long as they don't pull a lockn and hold the refunds forever before begrudgingly eventually sending them out, CID and the Dead don't end up looking too bad in this.

The one time I paid for trip insurance it was denied because COVID had been declared as a thing in China when I bought.Hope Loose Ankles answer is better than mine.Did you buy trip insurance? that covers your airfare? If not, it might not be too late.

The difference with Woodstock 50 and other failures is that they failed due to bad planning, low resources, a general bad idea, etc. and, as you note, a naive optimism that things will work out by chance. The situation here is an external, although known, vector. Who knows how deep the planning was. It reminds me of Woodstock 50th Anniversary… in both cases right up to the last minute, despite everyone saying this is a bad idea, talent pulling out, refunds demanded, etc… they both were like “No, it’s gonna be cool”.
Recall last year that a major event had to be cancelled due to smoke from forest fires! That's a new one.
