LOCKN 2023 Rumor Mill Starts Here

for your reason I would doubt the mini's are economically viable.  Given the actual attendance last year, which had to be disappointing for the owners, I think it was a test that failed.  

As I said, they work for me personally, but although I have been called one, I am not a critical mass.

I’ll say it til I’m blue in the face… if you book bands that are worth a fuck… the single weekends could work and be the future. But you can’t trot out JRAD the same weekend that Dead & Co kicks off their tour 100 miles away, Goose didn’t have the buzz & name recognition they do now & the watered drown TTB lineup they had wasn’t anything to write home about either.

You have a Billy Strings weekend, Keller late night, Marcus King to open and you’ll sell 10,000 tickets plus, without a problem.

You book Widespread Panic, w/ Blackberry Smoke to open & Lettuce late night, you’ll sell 10,000 tickets easy…

Goose now would sell a lot better too.

SCI & UM each doing 2 Sets a night, switching headlining each night would sell too. Have their side projects, Kyle Hollingsworth Band, Bill & Jillian Nershi, Doom Flamingo, Bayliss/Cinninger Duo Show, etc for late night shows.

And if they wanted to sell 40,000 tickets they could Book Phish all by themselves… single band weekends could work if done half way properly. You just have get back on BRAND if you’re Lockn. If you have things you can’t see anywhere but that one weekend then you’re sitting gold, but if you trot out bullshit I can see at my local theater or bar then, you’ll struggle. If they had a Phil/Mayer lineup, or Phil w/ Trey & Page, that’s shit you can’t see at home… and people would travel from all over to see it.

At this point Shapiro is counting on being able to announce what he wants when he wants and we'll just drop whatever the fuck we are doing to be there because it'll just be that awesome. Well I'll tell ya what, I'm from Missouri so show me mutherfucker!

To piggy back on that DMB is another band that’s big enough to hold its own stand alone weekend too. They’d sell 20K tickets for just them, with a Tim & Dave Acoustic Set each afternoon. That’d be solid.

They could do a more mainstream festival with DMB too, add My Morning Jacket, The Avett Brothers & The Lumineers as other headliners. It would up the cost of tickets, but would open up the venue to new demographics.

I noticed the missing VaB annual stop for DMB and have not had a chance to investigate. DMB has often been on the rumor list, and it is usually met with mixed opinion, but I see reasons, under the circumstances of yesterday, why "he" would pass it up. But times are different.   Also, Capshaw also manages Trey and Phish, both big names at Lockn', as well as a dozen bands each year under his Red Light Management (incl Ween) so I don't think the connection is a pipeline.

I haven't checked the dfates but the Virginia hole in DMB's schedule could be Pharell's "Something in the Water" in VaB.

Or to your point, DMB finishes, as always, at The Gorge at Labor Day, which could send him back to Lockn' early September. 

ETA DMB is not playing SITW this year. And sometimes they have skipped VaB so it's not necessarily a sign of something. What remains to be seen.....

I'd like another Krasno/Lettuce one night, and JRAD with anyone who played that weekend the next night, please.

Tedeschi Trucks summer tours ends July 29. That leaves August and September for us!

Despite the wide range of opinions, wishes and speculation, the one thing on which all agree is that a "save the date" announcement is way overdue and at the least its absence is inconsiderate. Now, there is no date even to block!  So as people make other commitments--as they should--the crowd gets thinner. 

But one thing that endures is this forum, thanks to the tireless efforts of our fearless leaders, so we can maintain some momentum for when we gather again, and more important, keep the engines stoked for this great community of like-minded (mostly) friends.
