When I said ramblings, I meant it. Sorry in advance.
The more festivals I attend, the more I get jealous of the RV campers sleeping in comfortable beds with their AC/Heat going.
I figure its time to poke around and figure out the ins and outs of RVs.
I saw there is a thread already for RV Tips, but I didnt see one for renting/purchasing, so here is a new thread.
I think I'd be looking at a towable, just assuming that a drivable RV would add to the cost.
My 4runner max tow capacity is 5k, and I've been reading on the 4runner forums that 5k weight is possible but if you want a good experience without upgrading hitches and adding airbags etc its best to stick to around 3k.
I was originally looking at T@G and T@B's but eventually drifted to other brands with the ALiner Expedition looking the best to me at this moment (although 15 minutes from now it will probably be something else)
But that's kind of jumping the gun. First question!
What are the advantages to buying vs renting?
At first glance it seems that renting is the way to go, if I'm doing 4-5 festivals a year and renting, it seems like $110x4 nights x4 festivals comes out to about $2000 a year. At that pace it would take 13 years of renting to equal the purchase price of a $26k RV. (plus insurance/registration/tax etc for ownership)
I picked 26k because at this moment, Aliner Expedition Sofa Bed is what I was thinking about.
Are there hidden horror stories from renting? I'm picturing things breaking down, crazy owners adding stress, smelly/dirty, finding out at the last minute the RV isnt as expected/doesnt exist, etc?
And on the opposite side of that what are the hidden costs from ownership?
One of my main problems is that I don't have anywhere to store one, so that adds a ton to the cost of owning right off the bat.
Thats why I was looking at the ALiner Expedition. I might be able to keep that in the driveway without making enemies of my neighbors. It might even sit below the fence line, so they would barely notice it. I could also probably keep a teardrop in the driveway but would be more visible to the neighbors.
Looking at teardrops, I'm pondering Rustic Trail Polar Bear but I think (having never used either one) the Aliner seems like it would have a more comfortable camping experience than any of the tear drops.
And is the used RV market just weird? Seems like the prices are very elevated vs new compared to cars new/used pricing.
Anyway too much rambling.
What are your thoughts?
