Howdy friends! I didn't want to hijack the "Gates at 9" thread, but I could use some help understanding the gate/entry situation.
The only festie this large I've been to is Bonarroo, but we live there so I never drove in. The first year, the freeway (both sides of I-24) was completely stopped for 12+ hours and then moved slowly for another 12 hours. Nowadays, the same amount of people come in, but they've built new roads and freeway off-ramps to alleviate that. Now, after a short back-up right at gate time, traffic flows in seamlessly. (Again, this is just what I saw, I've never driven in.)
It was posted in another thread, "...if they don't open the doors early, it's going to be a disaster. i'll be there not too long after midnight. ill sleep in my car in line if i have to. i just hope that when they see the thousands of cars lined up, that they know they have no choice but to open it up."
So, I guess my questions are:
1) Do you mean "sleep in my car" as your car is sitting in traffic on the freeway or highway? Are you anticipating a fully stopped roadway? Do you pull your car off to the shoulder first? Is there a place for early arrivals to park and wait?
2) I have friends leaving Knoxville at 7 pm to get "there" around midnight. But where is "there"? Again, are they simply planning on there being a giant traffic jam to sleep in?
3) Will I just be driving along VA 29 at 4 a.m. and come to the Lockn traffic jam? If so, does that mean the highway will be completely blocked with cars full of sleeping people? What about all the poor travelers not headed to Lockn? Will they (or we) be diverted?
I want to get there as early as possible. I'm just confused as to what happens when people arrive early, and I want to be prepared for what I'm going to meet with at 4 a.m. Thurs morning. If it's a giant 12 hour traffic jam, so be it. I'll open the sunroof, start downing booze and call it the pre-party.
On a side note, what is your plan for traffic jam/gate waiting entertainment? Any pro-tips would be appreciated mucho!
