You don't know crazy until you've tried to buy alcohol in Pennsylvania. These crazy VA and TN rules seem perfectly sensible to a PA girl who has to go through a special "restaurant" checkout to buy a six pack of beer at the grocery store...and can't buy wine or liquor anywhere but the "State Store."

FBO those travelling to Virginia:

Liquor is sold ONLY in state ABC stores, and their hours are limited (generally 10 am-9 pm Mon-Sat and noon to 5 Sunday; not all are open Sunday). They have a limited selection of wine and mixers; no beer. Plastic bottles for many brands.
They are in Charlottesville, Lexington, Staunton and Lynchburg, for surrounding cities--check the VA-ABC website for small towns and specific locations. And it's highly taxed so it's not cheap here.

Wine/beer are sold together in grocery and most convenience stores including gas stations, as well as chains like Total Wine. Sales end at midnight or one am, resume 6 am (I think) but some localities may have other restrictions for Sundays. North Carolina has several counties that are dry on Sunday.

Wine/beer is also sold at wineries and breweries--several fine ones right in Nelson County. Wine is off the table since it's always in bottles at wineries (boxes are sold at many larger grocery stores and at Total Wine).

i concur. it is even worse when you are visiting PA and are trying to figure out that debacle of a system you have there. Complete opposite of Nevada where you can buy liquor at a CVS.

So, a pertinent question for the folks who are familiar with the VABC:

Do they sell "airline size" and "hip flask" bottles in VABC stores?

As mentioned in my original post, I'd prefer to bring a variety of different stuff in smaller bottles than bring a big bottle of just one thing.

And while it would be convenient if the "original" bottle was not glass, that isn't a deal breaker - I will be bringing "non glass" flasks to transfer as needed.

Lots of pints; not as many half-pints. Airplane bottles, plastic fifths, plastic handles.

A lot depends on the store; more airplane bottles in the poorer sections of town.

I've never seen liquor for sale (in GA), but I've never really looked either, so I have no idea.

I have seen people selling jello shots and stuff in the campgrounds before though.

Boxed wine fits better if you take the bladder out of the box and just hang the bladder next to yours. Unless you are really chunky, the box is a dead giveaway.
