I got the first album when I guess I was in 7th grade, and learned and played most songs on the guitar. When I spun the album for my younger sister, probably starting with Flag Decal, she said in a shocked voice, "But it's country!" because at the time, our mother would inflict AM country radio on us in the car, causing us bratty teens to howl and make a fuss. I was frankly at a loss to explain why it wasn't country and why it was good. Now, of course, we are both big fans of both kinds of music--country and John Prine.

On their 1979 album The Wall, Pink Floyd released a song titled "Vera", referencing Vera Lynn and the song "We'll Meet Again" with the lyrics "Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn? / Remember how she said that / We would meet again / Some sunny day?".[48] "We'll Meet Again" was also used as an intro to the live performances of The Wall in 1980 and 1981 (as can be heard on Is There Anybody Out There? Well, that's almost interesting.

Charlie Daniels died.

He was a driving force in so many ways back in the 70's and 80's. He linked country/bluegrass to outlaw country with that fiddle and his persona as a farmer, horse rider and musician. His "Jams" kicked off the country music festivals along the likes of Willie Nelson's picnic. He brought in his politics but not in an offensive way, and kept a good off-stage presence. "Long Hair Country Boy" spoke to the "youths" while "Orange Blossom Special" connected to the roots and the older set. He was a bit older than many of those popularizing country/Southern rock at the time and was in that sense a father figure.

One of my Best Nights Ever was when Grinderswitch, Charlie Daniels and Marshall Tucker played at Scope; members from one band sat in with the others, and at the end all three bands filled the stage for a good 30 minute jam.

It's sad that a lead article on his passing refers to "Devil Went Down to Georgia" as his "best known." There was so much more to him and his music than that Pure Pop Hit. Songs like "Texas" and "Everything is Kinda Alright" had strength and depth but are now lost on Rotation Radio.

Peter Green--little known to the pop circuit that he founded Fleetwood Mac--and further unknown, it was a British blues band. Further unknown among the pop circuit that he wrote Black Magic Womoan, and as a blues song.
