Following an article by Rolling Stone that erroneously declared that Dead & Company’s summer 2022 would be the last time they’d tour, members took to social media to quell fears and cleanse confusion. The first direct response from the band came from Bob Weir, who wrote “News to me…” on Twitter after Rolling Stone shared the article on the platform. Micky Hart shared a screenshot of Weir’s post on Instagram with the caption, “Hey @rollingstone, it’s a little late for April Fools.” Not long after, Oteil Burbridge posted a photo with a guitar strapped to his back and a stern expression with the captions “sources told me…It’s never over…” above and below him. Later, Bill Kreutzmann, in a light-hearted fashion, wrote on Weir’s post, “Whew. I thought you knew something that I didn’t! #themusicneverstops #wewillsurvive”Collectively Dead & Company wrote a statement, “Dead & Company has made no official decision as to this being their final tour.” Additionally, Rolling Stone has updated their article since the band members responded, changing the headline from “Breaking: Dead and Company will stop touring after 2022” to “Will Dead and Company Stop Touring After 2022?”

I’d say without knowing who the author’s sources were, it’s impossible to judge the veracity of the report or the response. If the guys sources were Mayer, Mayer’s people, Azoff, etc… then he’s gotta go to print with it, now if he just read PT’s Green Board then shame on him. I think the real malfeasance here was the initial “no comment”, had the band’s people squashed it then, then there is no story. That “no comment” gave the story the “green light” journalistically. And even now, they’ve each put out “non denial denials” and an official statement of “no decision has been made”, I’d say that’s a weak rebuttal. I think the sources were legit, the story had an “embargo” for a length of time, Rolling Stone went to print early, then in an effort to discredit the report and save face the band put out a “soft denial”. They learned their lesson from PITS when they responded to the rumor about Mayer with a statement that said “John Mayer will definitely be there” just before the refund window closed, and then a few days later Mayer has COVID and can’t play. I think these guys will say whatever’s advantageous to them at the time. Maybe they didn’t want to create a ticket buying frenzy where scalpers bought up all the tickets on “last tour” rumors”, even if they’re true, maybe Mayer’s moving on hasn’t told Bob Weir yet, maybe Azoff isn’t gonna rep them anymore, it could a lotta things. But I’m not sure the story isn’t true & I'm not ready to shit on Rolling Stone. They didn’t get it wrong, their source got cold feet, that’s a big difference. Only time will tell. I think touring is over and what we see from them going forward is a few mini residencies and 3 Day runs around holidays, similar to Phil & Widespread’s schedules since they both quit touring. Whether that’s with or without Mayer, is TBD.

Music news, like this story, are as reliable as facebook but because the subject is not important, it doesn't matter, any more than news about David Cassidy in Tiger Beat.

I’d say Mayer is indifferent. If it ends cool, if not, it only takes up a couple months of his year anyway. He could definitely “just quit”, he’s fulfilled any obligations he had & made those guys more money than they can count. I don’t think his place in Dead Anthology is all that, he’s another Kimock, Kadlecik or Haynes, nothing more or less. He’s just the mercenary of the hour they got for Jerry’s lead guitar. He definitely makes more money playing solo, he plays just as big of venues and doesn’t have to split the money as equally as in Dead & Co. I’d say Dead & Co cost him money. Any time spent with them, means he’s not promoting himself & he’s not getting the crossover appeal to make up the difference. I’d guess after Dead & Co, he’ll be like the other hired guns that had solo careers, like Warren. He’ll play some Dead themed shows here there, an Oteil & Friends set, a JRAD sit in, etc… but not a full blown band that tours as a cover band. He’ll spend his time writing music & playing it.

I was pondering this the other day.
If both JRAD and some band with Mayer, Chimenti, Oteil, random drummer, random rhythm guitar came to town and were playing on the same night which would you go see?

I would probably go see JRAD, their tickets would be half the price.
For me if there was gonna be a band put together to try & fill sheds, I’d like to see a band with Mayer, Jackie Greene (maybe Krasno instead), Marco Benevento, Joe Russo, Jason Hann, horns like Hartswick, Cressman, & Casey and a female singer like Elliot Peck/ Susann Tedeschi to fill it out.
