Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
Cops had nothing to do with it after you got on the property. There were a couple different security companies at check in....some would do a quick search...others took their time. There wasn't a whole lot of urgency. What was mentioned to me...SVIP/VIP check in was run by a different company than the regular gates. Shirts seemed to show that to be the case. We'll see what happens this year. The 6am arrival time was evident with the email survey. As to why they don't update the sight...well, I called them on a couple items earlier this year. I don't know if they are efficient enough to make a fast change. Nor do I know if they really want it published...other than on some smaller areas. (that would help spread things out) Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.
Anybody hear when Gates open for the 2014 Festival

Yea, I think they would want to avoid it, but just can't. My thought is it is a liabililty insurance issue - having the date/time extended would increase the cost of the policy, which is likely astronomical already.

Well just saw the announcement so I guess that answers my question.
saw the announcement for the purchase of land, did they mention something other than dawn on Thursday? I will be staying in Charlotteville on the Wednesday and showing up between 6 & 7 AM, but agreed don't want to be waiting in line for hours

The response was that they basically wanted to be certain before posting to the entire population...or some such thing.

Last year's problems were largely organizational. Whatever "plan" was in place was poorly thought out.
The police were largely concerned with getting people off of the highway, which created a huge problem for everyone waiting in line. There were many people who got in line before 9:00 am who watched literally hundreds of cars cut in front of them after arriving hours later. This was because the police took two courses of action to get traffic off the highway:
a) They directed cars into a line that directly bypassed the "original" lines, where many people sat idle in what is now known as "the field of broken dreams" (last year's Day Parking area).
b) They also directed cars onto a back road, which also bypassed people who had been in line for hours.
This was pretty frustrating for a lot of people. Hundreds of cars sat idle hours after the gates opened. Moreover, anyone who took the time to walk around a bit could tell that there wasn't much of a plan in place.
The problem got even worse in the afternoon, as there were still hundreds of cars in line waiting to get into GA camping. Unfortunately, this line happened to be occupying the field that was supposed to be Day Parking, which was slated to open at 2:00 pm. Day Parkers began to arrive and ended up in the same line as GA camping (in fact, they were in line where they were supposed to be parked). When people were still in line at 4:00 pm (when the music was scheduled to start), they started telling GA campers they could leave their cars, so see the music, and return later to get their vehicle into the campgrounds.
The result was the "field of broken dreams," where you had people waiting in line to get into the campgrounds, people parking their cars for the day, and GA campers abandoning their vehicle to avoid missing the music on Thursday. I personally didn't bear witness to this, but it sounds like it got pretty chaotic. (Perhaps someone else can reflect on exactly what happened in the field that afternoon.)
Considering everything that happened, and the fact that it was basically the only blemish on what was otherwise an absolutely outstanding first year festival, you've got to figure they've put a lot more time, money, and thought into fixing this problem. As long as they have a plan in place to keep moving at a steady pace, where people are actually allowed inside in the order they arrived, things should be a lot better this year. They've obviously taken efforts towards this already (the purchase of the land) and it looks like Day Parking should have a completely different entrance than camping.
At the end of the day, you've got to keep your perspective on this. There are tens of thousands of people descending on a very small amount of space. It is going to take some time to get inside. If you're expecting to get in line and be pitching your tent 90 minutes later, your expectations might not be realistic. I have no problem waiting in line for a few hours as long as it seems to move regularly and I don't have to watch people cut in front of me.
As long as you're inside in time to catch all your favorite bands on Thursday, then the arrival was a success. I'm not sure there's another festival in the country that has a Thursday as bad-ass as Lockn'. If this were Bonnaroo you'd be seeing The Moody Smegmas and Androgynous Toe-Ring instead of Umphrey's McGee and the String Cheese Incident.

Couple points:
Last Year - Field of Broken Dreams was a dumping ground for Day Parkers and In-Coming Campers (RV/Tent/VIP). There was no direction for either group, it was all inter-mingled. We did spend 7.5 hours waiting. There was a very large group of people that were partying for several hours either waiting to get to camping or day parkers waiting to get into the show.
This year: I am sure these groups will be directed to separate waiting areas this year; Parkers and Campers (waiting to enter camping/tenting/RV.etc...)
Since the Day Parkers were inter-mingled (lack of direction) may parked their car in place. This cause major confusion (imagine navigating a 35 foot RV in this sea of parked cars.
Entrances:
Last Year - 1 the Field of Broken Dreams off HWY 29; then they eventually opened Diggs Mountain Road
This year - 2 entrances; HWY 29 and Diggs Mountain Road (this is not confirmed; but it makes the most sense)
Searches:
Last year - Started off as thorough; then went to what it should be; Any Glass? Weapons? Gas tanks? and checking coolers.
This year - I suspect it will be more thorough but more organized. The basics; Glass, Weapons, Gas Tanks, Checking coolers. But the reality, they cannot spend 20 mins a vehicle or it will be a major cluster.
I really wish LOCKN would announce entrance times and locations so we can start planning rather than just guessing and everyone bum-rushes the gates at first light.
I did miss the entire first day last year and WILL NOT this year. If it hasnt improved to the point I can see the first day, this is the last LOCKN I will attend (unfortunetly).
