What are these directions? We stopped at that gas station at the end of Lovingston last year...very nice (the one with the care wash). Then went south some more (actually hit a cross st just past the north gate and did a uturn of sorts)! im a lot less concerned this year than i was last year. either way, i'm going to be closer than i was last year, and i was about as close as could be for car campingOnce again this year, I have the burning question:
Which Car Camping area will be filled first?!

I can't disagree with that. However, it is act actually the side stages I'm concerned about. I'll be up every morning with Keller and partying late with Dumpstaphunk, Derek/Susan, and Bustle. I dare say I'm more excited for those shows than the main stage. Being camped in The Greenfield would make my life a lot easier from a logistical standpoint.

while i can't say i'm "more excited for those shows than the main stage," i can certainly say im pumped for them! last year when someone asked me at like 1 in the morning if i wanted to walk an extra mile or half mile or w/e to see pegi young, i thought they were crazy. this year, i'm gonna be up til all hours of the morning

Based on the material that came with my ticket, they have the VIPs coming in the back way. The instructions have people getting off 29 at Front St., on the south end of Lovingston and three miles north of the entrance off 653. Then there's a lot of winding around to pick up 653 east of the site and to come in that way.
I wasn't there last year so I don't know how different this is but seemed to me to be a change.

If traveling to Lockn from the North, is it possible to arrive to the venue by avoiding Lovingston and traveling on James River Road, just north of Oak Ridge Road? Anyone try that last year by using backroads?

That is what sparkdog was talking about. That is going to be the VIP entrance apparently. More concisely it will be the VIP ONLY entrance. You can try it and one of two things will happen. You can breeze on in and navigate around the inside of the campgrounds to get where you are supposed to be. This is highly unlikely. Or you can get rejected at the VIP entrance gate and have to travel all the way back and get in the GA line and be even farther back than you would have been. This is the most likely scenario.

I am, but I have VIP and am coming in Friday morning. I was going to do that anyway before they set up this entrance. I agree it's likely to be blocked off at some point esp. Thursday.
My instructions also say that if a car arrives at VIP and not everyone in the car has a VIP ticket then the "entire car" is sent to GA (which I guess is better than taking a sawzall and cutting the car based on which ticket holders sit where). So I can only pick up VIP hitch hikers,
