I think late Winter or early Spring will be time to start paying attention. If the format stays the same, with single band centered weekends then we should see announcements from the bands around then as summer schedules come out. If it’s gonna be a full on festival like “Ghost of Christmas Past” then I’d still expect the announcement around then, if the festival is happening Fall 2022.
Personally, I don’t think 4 day fest comes back for another year. Alotta bands took haircuts this summer/year, let alone in 2020. I think more bands will looking to do their own 3 Day thing more than usual. They’ll need the payday. The venue needs it too. I think last year was just put together last minute, on a shoe string budget & despite that, weather & COVID, there was still good music for 3 weekends.
I think next summer we’ll see something at Lockn each month May through September. Something like:
May( Memorial Day weekend)- Widespread Panic 3 Nights 6 Sets, Jerry Joseph & The Jack Mormons open, Lettuce doing Late Nights & Horns sitting in with WSP, probably Jimmy Herring’s 5 to 7, Whatever Project Schools is working on each do a set early afternoon one day.
June: String Cheese Incident, 7 Sets, 3 Nights, 1 Set with Keller Williams & Sit Ins. Keller opening each afternoon. Leftover Salmon as an opener and late nights Marcus King Band.
July: Allman Brothers Theme weekend: Tedeschi Trucks 3 Sets, 2 Nights, Gov’t Mule 1 Set each day, an Oteil & Friends Set one afternoon & another on Sunday w/ Derek, Warren, Jaimoe, Marc, Chuck, etc… and The Allman Betts Band late night.
August: Phish… that’s it.
September (Labor Day): Something Dead related… JRAD again maybe, Phil & Friends or a weekend of side projects. I could see a weekend with The Wolf Brothers one night, Billy & The Kids one night and an Oteil & Friends Set headlining the other night, put JRAD late night & Billy Strings opening as well as sitting in everywhere & you got a winner.
I could also see Twiddle getting a weekend, Umphrey’s or Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. I also think Goose deserves another weekend, those dudes are the biggest “come up” I’ve seen.

I don't see the "single band weekend" coming back after what happened this year.
I see one big 3-4 day festival of the previous formula--they have to keep the brand alive. And that could easily entail getting away from the "50 year anniversary" events, much as I love them, and dropping down a few decades to grab a bigger market share.

FBONershi wasn't at Lockn this year, he doesn't know how bad it was (attendance wise)
The attendance at "Jrad" was about 1500 top, and TTB about 2500 top--maybe a few more VIP daytrippers on Sunday, which was surprising-the VIP tent was packed. But that's not a lot of people, maybe 50, and who knows whether they were comped!
I think Goose weekend was in between but have no info.
These numbers did not reach the break-even point, that I know. And some of the TTB/Goose attendees may have had the free rollover from JRAD, but givne JRAD's low attendance, that would not be significant.
Anecdotally, when I arrived at JRAD at 1:00 pm I was the third car that day. Leaving Sunday around noon I saw a couple dozen day trippers coming in.
But as a private party, it was great! It was a small crowd but a good crowd. Right mellow, said some disappointed younger ragers.

I mean, I know the attendance was down or even non existent from some of the footage I saw. I think the fact they booked a cover band pressed up against the start of the band they cover in the same geographical area, with no real support act, then booked Goose, a band who while amazing live is still on the come up & just doesn’t put enough asses in the seats & rather than pair them with another rising act or middle level jam band…they chose Dawes, then I think advertising a watered down TTB, having Lettuce pull out & the debacle that was the 1st weekend, the TTB weekend was doomed to fail as well. All that, coupled with the “unpleasantness” of COVID, the over saturation of that geographic area, Phish in AC, Dead & Co in Bristow & Raleigh, SCI booking the canceled shows in the Asheville, Nashville & Louisville areas plus the facts that none the bands they booked can even fill a shed on their own let alone sellout a mini festival based around only them, that they charged an outrageous amount of money for these weekends & that promoters expect people to travel for them… financially it was always gonna be fail.
But the idea is sound… you just gotta give people something worth a fuck. They book Phish for 3 nights, build the midway, the whole deal & they’ll sell as many tickets as they can print, guaranteed…
They book Widespread Panic for 3 nights, in that area with on site camping & any kinda opening/late night act & I guarantee they sell 15K tickets within two weeks.
They book String Cheese & focus the supporting acts around their side gigs, bluegrass or funk (just no EDM or DJ’s) and they’ll sell 10K tickets.
Put Phil with a real lineup, not fucking Dawes or just the Family Band, something like The Q, Kadlecik & Greene together, a Phriends night with Trey & Page, or a night with Russo/Benevento & Mayer.
If your gonna have TTB, you gotta have something else like Mule & you gotta have a set that “draws”, Warren sitting in, a special guest, etc.. TTB doesn’t sell out their own shows, thinking they can carry a weekend is not sound thinking.
You just can’t put bullshit out there & expect people to swallow it with a smile. But if they book bands people wanna see & will pack up the car for & deal with all the bullshit out there… then they’ll be ok. But if it’s more watered down shit for twice the money then they’re done. I’d love to see a return to 4 days around Labor Day. But I’m good with the single weekend themes too, they just have to be worth it. If I can see SCI, WSP or even Dead & Co at Red Rocks for $100’s of dollars less than I can see JRAD at Lockn then, Lockn is gonna go away. They need to make these weekends $199, $50 to camp, $199 to bring an RV and do away with all the different tiers of tickets, camping, etc… just make it simple & supply good times.

Everything you said here is right on and consistent with insight I have from others in the know. The best pint you made was "the facts that none the bands they booked can even fill a shed on their own let alone sellout a mini festival based around only them..."
Second, that which many of us love about Lockn', the location, geographically, hinders its success. If you don't live in driving distance and/or don't camp, it's a number of stops to get there even when travel is fairly smooth and there are no accommodations within 15 minutes or transportation to go back and forth (book the dorms at Sweetbriar College 20 minutes away?) So an event has to be big enough for long distance travel and then your market is cut due to campers only.

This is true, but you follow that up with bands that have an intense but limited following. Railbird sold out 35K people the same weekend as JRAD. The logistics were terrible. Limited hotels and Uber. No shuttles or camping. All held on a, wait for it, horse racing track. Why did they come? Relevant and modestly diverse bands.

Yes it can, demonstrably in 2014-16. Also, Bonnaroo. Or at least in the 20Ks. Certainly more than 1500. No camping is worse than lots of hotels and Uber; kids are resilient and poor. If you build it, they will come. but it can't bring that crowd to Arrington.

I really think the big errors were:
1. Clustering the shows all together in August. If people are traveling any distance at all, they're not going to be able to do it three weekends in a row.
2. Pricing. The prices were WAY too high for the music being offered. And don't even get me started on how much they were charging for RV camping...
3. They forgot to consult me about the dates.

Yup, I can take 1 friday and monday off. But I can't take 3 fridays and mondays off in a row.I really think the big errors were:

Surely they didn't think enough people would attend all three. August is a busy time for most anyway. But it doesn't seem like a good idea to cut your market into thirds, either, especially after you eliminated the long distance travelers to begin with. No matter how you look at it, it didn't make sense other than just for the sake of doing something to keep the brand alive.
